Do you know the one word that elected a president? It’s “change.” Now senior citizens can make a change, although I prefer to say, “Park it.” Yes, park your vehicle and let Grand Valley Transit do your driving.

If you have a bit of trouble getting in and out of your car (such as if you use a cane) and can’t get to the bus stop, Grand Valley Transit has the answer for you. The buses have lifts that move you right in. Wheelchairs work, too. And now you can go straight to Mesa Mall from Clifton Transit Center. It’s the same price all the way to the mall, and the buses leave once each hour. The first time I go on the bus, I had walked to the covered bench. Since the bus driver noticed my gray hair, he asked if I had my Medicare card. If so, the fare would be only 50 cents. Imagine that!

After many visits to the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Hospital, I thought I had better get out to the real world. I had heard about the Grand Valley Transit service called “door to door” (also called “para transit.”) I discovered they would pick me up at my driveway. Now that is what I call a deal. And that is how I started going for lunch at the Senior Center.

I had lived in Grand Junction several years, I read about the Senior Center and how I could pay $1 to visit it. The Senior Center serves meals, so I took a menu home and phoned for a reservation. A young lady asked if I drove there. When I said I took the bus, she said she could send a bus for me and it would only be 50 cents each way. It’s called Senior Transportation Service and now I go most of the time. That’s not GVT, but they use GVT buses and drivers.
