Bravo! Theresa Bloom openly exposed the true nature of Mesa County Public Library’s selection, “The God Of Animals”. Thank you for opening our eyes!
My comments might not have been as gracious and delicate as hers, however, my concerns are as extreme in relation to the selection process and decision to press this book into the public schools. As adult literature, perhaps, if so desired. However, our precious treasure of young children should not be influence by the innuendoes and language within this selection. Even worse, the material is placed before them by “the library,” a resource children and adults as well, tend to trust.
If it was intended for only adult readers, it has never been so defined in the promotions. Sadly, in choosing this material the Mesa County Public Library committee is making a statement of values which are not embraced by the majority of county citizens. “One Book, One Mesa County”? I believe they’ve brought shame upon themselves in expecting the citizens of this great area to lower their family values and child protection concerns by joining with them in reading this publication. The experiential unity they are seeking will not be found by promoting books which are not inspiring, positive or nurture family values.
