I attended the Mesa County Commission meeting on Monday when they approved rules for use when considering permits or applications from companies to dig evaporative pits. The commissioners and planners are to be commended for being the first county to propose such rules and for the conscientious way they went about settling on appropriate language and content.

I hope the commissioners will seriously consider the recommendations of DeBeque residents who spoke about making the policy a regulation and placing pits at least a mile from homes. Residents in this town know what they are talking about as they bear health problems from close proximity to the Black Mountain Disposal pits near DeBeque.
