This is a reply to the front-page article regarding the drag strip.

I realize that funding for the Western Colorado Dragway seems to be a large amount of money to improve a county owned facility. This facility is in much need of repair.

Over the past few years, the raceway has sponsored Friday night racing for the local youth in our community. This program has curbed the late night street-racing problem that we are experiencing. Under controlled, strict guidelines, the youth of our community have had a place to race their car without endangering others or themselves.

I am a parent and my biggest concern would be to have my children participate in illegal street racing and to make a foolish mistake in jeopardizing a human life. By repairing and maintaining our local raceway, I feel that our entire community will benefit from a facility that allows the youth in Mesa County to race under controlled circumstances.
