Rick Wagner made some good points regarding communities in his op-ed piece on Feb. 28. Unfortunately, his conclusions, as often seems to be the case, land perilously far from any pertinent mark consistent with logic — that burdensome, yet relevant tool for navigating reality. Yes, the benefits of “banding together for a great purpose” is of upmost importance as a means to a goal. Furthermore, I applaud ideologues who truly believe in their cause and organize in order to increase their chances of realizing their ends.

My dilemma is that issues that are important to me and the sides that I take on them can be found strewn about both of our major parties’ platforms. But what is most important to me is electing people who display leadership with integrity and who have the ability to seek out consensus in order to best serve all the citizens of our nation. Such people, I’ve surmised, can be found in both major parties.

My community consists of my fellow Americans. We all will reap what is sewn. Parties play an important role, don’t get me wrong; though, judicious independence is where my mind finds itself most at ease. Oh and by the way, I believe that it happens to be the independents who have had the most success lately as they seek their “great purpose.”
