Editor:
After reading Alex Taylor’s opinion piece of March 6th, several things disturbed me about his article.

The first was his rather obvious attempt to cloak himself in the mantle of our founders. To this individual at least, that usually reflects more an attempt to cloak one’s own intellectual nakedness and claim credit for the contribution of others, not one’s own. Both, I categorically reject.

Our founders did not merely discard the “old” but worked to replace it with the “new.” That was done at great personal risk. And that dear reader is the fundamental difference between Mr. Taylor and our founders.

Then Mr. Taylor states that he does not understand Mr. Obama. He even quotes a statement from that gentleman. Such an inability to understand what Barrack Obama represents tells us much more of Mr. Taylor than it does of Mr. Obama. It is also a startling admission from the publisher of a newspaper, an organization which seldom hesitates to influence public opinion.

If Mr. Taylor were better educated in history, he would have long ago realized that underlying Mr. Obama’s message is one thing. It is that the government belongs to the people, and not special interests. And, it is time that we reestablish control over it. Perhaps Mr. Taylor disagrees with that, as it might not suit his purpose. But, he should not say that he does not “understand.”

Currently, there are two candidates running against Mr. Obama. One is of his own party, Hillary Clinton. The second is John McCain, the “anointed” Republican. Both represent the “old guard” and are quite content with the status quo.

When real change is required, one has to change the “thinking.” Without that happening the only thing that can possibly change is “form.” Substance will not change. When Mr. Obama speaks of “real change” that is what he refers to.

Our founders accomplished much more than change the form of governance. What they did was first “change the thinking.” We should demand no less of ourselves.
