This is the response to Kevin McChesney’s letter in The Daily Sentinel March 7.

It was fate that the two dogs that killed your cat were Chinese Shar-Peis. Had it been different breeds like two collies or labradors, would you have a different response?

Dogs have been chasing cats for years. Yes, some have caught and killed them but that doesn’t mean the only dogs that do that are Shar-Pei’s, pit bulls and other so-called violent dog breeds.

Have we forgotten that dogs are descendants from wolves, animals that kill to eat? So naturally this instinct has been passed down. Sometimes all the dogs want to do is to play, and overly excited they kill them.

Banning these types of dogs would have no effect whatsoever because dogs will still chase cats, its in their blood and there is no way we can take it out of them.

Thank you Rachal for that information. Fate…interesting.

    Well, that says absolutely nothing.

Well, if you were more intelligent than your dog, you could try training him/her. But in these parts, the dogs are usually smarter than their owners.

    Hmmm, an accurate assumption jaysson.

How do you get a dog to train its owner?

    I can see it now….

People in the park walking their dogs, when one dog turns and bites the owner for not cleaning up after the dog did its business….

    Any dog trainers out there?

Yep, I agree, any dog regardless of it’s breed type, “if” it catches a cat it will kill it. I had a cat once with six toes, there-goes the name, “Toes” neat cat as far as cats go. Two Lab’s caught her and tore her to bits. Haven’t had a cat since nor a dog for that matter. What do you think would happen to a bird if a cat caught it?

The statement that “any dog regardless of it’s breed type, ‘if’ it catches a cat it will kill it,” is patently ridiculous.

I have owned and known plenty of dogs who were raised to be tolerant of cats. However, it does take an owner who is capable of training the dog properly. As Mr. Jaysson noted, that is rare these days, and indeed the dog is typically the more intelligent party.

So everyone agree’s this is a training and responsibilty issue, not a breed issue?

radwinters, I guess it takes a dummy not to note that I was speaking of the nature of a dog, not the “trained” behavior of a dog. Who hasn’t seen pictures of dogs and cats together in loving harmony? You missed the point! Then you went public with your emotions of how wrong I am. You said it yourself: “I have owned and known plenty of dogs who were raised to be tolerant of cats.” Out of the nature of dogs/animals is the ability to be trained to “tolerate” another, other then it’s own kind. So, naturally speaking radwinters, “any dog regardless of it’s breed type, “if” it catches a cat it will kill it.

There is so much wrong here I don’t know where to start.

It’s not “fate,” its not “bad” dogs, it’s the owner’s failure to properly contain the dogs, as required by law for all dogs. Period.

Tonya, I ditto that! Owner responsibility, for all animals.
