As a member of the Grand Valley Power Network and an avid proponent for developing a conservation program, I must respond to Mr Wagner’s latest diatribe.

Mr Wagner suggests that HB 1107, mandating conservation programs by muncipal utilities and rural electric associations will cost Grand Valley Power $500,000 over two years. In his diatribe, he suggests that the left, including Rep. Bernie Buescher, the best representative we have had in a long time, is once again creating programs that waste a lot of money.

I would suggest something entirely different. By implementing this program and investing $500,000 in conservation over the next two years, Grand Valley Power can begin reducing the need to its planned expansion in infrastructure by 20 to 30 percent, indefinitely.

Over the course of decades to come, this $250,000 per year investment in conservation can save Grand Valley literally millions of dollars on additional transformer stations, power lines, other very expensive equipment and the additional costs of expanding its crews to perform maintenance. This investment is rock solid.

I have walked the talk. I am willing to bet that by aggressively performing the steps that this type of conservation program would encourage, that my 450 kilowatt-hour monthly average beats by at least 30 percent Mr Wagner’s monthly usage. Let’s see your average monthly bill, Rick.

I had a chat with Jack Broughton, General manager for GVP this afternoon, and it became quite apparent Mr Wagner is not speaking in any way for GVP. They have already budgeted conservation and RE funding into their 2008 year, a new and exciting feature that many GVP customers have been calling for, and are adding a staffing position. The savings I insinuated earlier are probably inflated, however not nearly to the extent of pretentiousness Mr Wagner seems to want to delegate to himself.
