I think the enthusiasm expressed in the recent editorial for an events center on the city’s Jarvis property may come from the prospect that it is badly needed and presumably would be free to taxpayers. I think more unbiased thought is needed and I believe some drawbacks will be discovered.
Presumably, the center would be capable of handling events attended by thousands of people. I think I read the figure to be as much as 8,000, although that may be wrong. How do that many people get into the property in a reasonable time frame without badly tying up traffic on the only two major traffic arteries adjacent the property?
Exit(s) off the new Riverside Parkway, which is meant to expedite traffic around the downtown area? You might remember that there is only one lane in each direction on the parkway.
Exit off of Fifth Street? There are two bridges and one large interchange in the area. What would thousands of cars trying to enter the property just prior to and after an event do to traffic on both arteries and how long might it take?
It’s hard to imagine where and how many exits to the property there might be but it’s easy to see what would happen to traffic trying to go through the downtown area on Highway 50 or around the downtown on the Riverside Parkway, which was the reason for it’s existence. How often would the probable huge traffic tie-ups occur? If the promoters of the facility hope to pay for it and make a profit, I’m sure that they are hoping for frequent events to make it pay.
This is only one of the questions that have to be answered before giving the facility the go ahead. If the facility becomes a reality and proves unworkable, you can bet that its owners will be looking for a bail-out from somebody, most probably the city. The story will be “how can we abandon such an expensive, existing facility in the face of such need by the citizens?”
I don’t know about you, but I try to avoid events that require traffic and parking nightmares. And as a motorist trying to get someplace, I don’t appreciate long delays for traffic created by a large event.
Maybe those things can be avoided in this case but I wonder how extensive the north/south cross-town street network would have to be improved and who would pay for it? Would the facility still be “free”? And how would citizens respond if using the facility was not reasonably convenient?

John:
Hello. I never had the pleasure of discussing an issue with you previously but I have been jaundiced by riposting with the likes of nimrods like Willis_Leon_Johnson so please pardon any rough edges.
As someone who actually owns property in Riverside I just hope the City can do it right. As for the on-site parking concerns I believe, that you, as a former City Council candidate, are wide of the mark. People should take the bus, carpool, bike and/or walk to get there for events.
For those that want to drive-fine. Build a parking structure to minimize paving over all the usable space and charge people for the convenience of doing so. Your approach is a half-empty glass approach-there isn’t enough vehicular access for all the cars that would fill the place so we can’t approve it-I disagree.
No floggin-IV-your-bottoms’ yet.

Gee,4(IQ?),
“I have been jaundiced by riposting with the likes of nimrods like Willis_Leon_Johnson ”
I ignored your last tirade and personal attack, and I still weigh heavily on your mind(less).
When will you ever present your side of any discussion, and quit relying on personal attacks?
So far, throughout ALL your posts, all you have presented is personal vendettas, and your childish little “flogging” threats.
Do you consider yourself to be our mommy?
Mr Borgen, I am sure there will never be any love lost between us, however, on this issue you appear to be right.
The private individual involved is also making attempts to remove the Mesa County Fairgrounds as a source of competition.
That would make his events center a veritable monopoly, and would certaily not be “free” to the taxpayers to use.
Nor would it be self sustaining, and would require taxpayer funds to continue operation.

I would like to add an opinion about the tirades of ‘IM Flogginbottoms IV’ (immature name to begin with) you have not presented an adult opinion with your responses in the past and I expect the future holds the same. I personally am tired of your tirades! Perhaps you learned your online skills of communication through using ‘My Page’ or other senseless blogs, but this is the adult world and you need to learn to respond to commentary as an informed adult or go elswhere. . . please.
I agree with Mr. Borgen on ths issue. I live on Orchard Mesa and have been looking forward to the faster, less trafficked new route to the West side of the valley. An enclosed events center would be great, because when the Mesa County fairgrounds hosts the monster truck events, dirt bike events or anything with music. . . it is heard by everyone within a mile or more radius. But wouldn’t it be a benefit to everyone considering, traffic congestion, noise etc if they built somewhere that can be accessed by I-70, Has lots of acreage and does not impact so many people. . . Mack for instance. Country Jam comes to mind.
