The positions taken by the editorial staff of The Daily Sentinel are all too frequently indicative of an extreme shallowness in the treatment of issues. Such is the case in that of amending constitutions. What is particularly noteworthy is that it deals solely with “form” or “how to” instead of the “why.”
The real problem is that most individuals, while professing respect for such documents, are all too willing to sacrifice their integrity when it does not suit there purposes, or if they believe something strongly enough in some abstract cause. Of course, when it is someone else attempting to do the same thing, that is not acceptable.
What that indicates to this individual is that “selfishness” overrides any sense of responsibility toward, or respect for, any such document. One is tempted to use words from the Bible, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Far too many, while they quote words or phrases from such documents, do not have the slightest inkling as to why those were first placed there. And, if one does not know that, one definitely should not use them. Only the uneducated and pretentious would even consider doing so.
Perhaps members of the editorial staff are merely reflecting the intellectual and emotional shallowness of society. While they have every right to do so, they may wish to consider that, if they wish to be taken at all seriously, they would do better to expend greater effort in the quest for knowledge and understanding, and far less in writing.
Quality, at least in this individual’s humble opinion, still remains far more important than quantity.

Robert,
Although you didn’t state what editorial you were talking about. Your arguments in your letter to the editor have convinced me, that there are just some people who are shallow and narrow minded, and thence, there are cases in which abortion should be legal, however, I feel compelled to remind you that if your position on withdrawal had been adhered to by your father, 66 years and 9 months ago, YOUR position would be mute.

Well, I guess the Marianna Trench is shallow too…
It must be the definition of “shallow”, like the definition of “is”?
Over the years, I have found the editorial staff to be fair, honest, and reasonable.
Even when some of the stuff they put out doesn’t exactly agree with my personal opinion.
The same with the regular columnists.
Even the wackiest of “their opinions” spark dialog and communication amongst the natives, which is the intent.
Keep up the good work.
