Joan Woodward’s prescription for addressing population growth here in Mesa County is worth heeding. I worked with citizen groups for the then city and county planning department in the late ’70s, another time when we faced unbridled growth.

That’s when a group of East Orchard Mesa residents diligently committed to attending planning commission and county commissioner hearings each and every time a rezone was proposed to tear out an orchard for a housing development. They drew up their own policies and came to be known as the formidable East Valley Citizens, early originators of the nationally recognized Mesa County Land Trust.

What they accomplished was inspiring then, and it’s inspiring now. Our voices can make difference.

Both Paula Anderson and Joan Woodward make excellent points about community involvement. I would add that while the issues being looked at appear to be local to the Northwest and Orchard Mesa Study Areas, in fact the entire valley is going to be affected by the resulting growth. I would therefore encourage all citizens of the valley who are interested in their futures to become active and make their wishes and concerns known to the City Council and County Commissioners.

The next time the sewer boundaries will be discussed will be on April 30, 5:30 PM, at the City Hall auditorium, so make your comments soon.
