Citizens of Fruita need to take note of recent action taken — or in the case, not taken — by the new Fruita City Council at the April 15 meeting. Many of you may not know, as I didn’t, that your vote only counts when it is applied to “the winners.”

To summarize, the election held April 1 was for a new mayor and three City Council member slots. Ken Henry was a councilman running for mayor. If he was elected, his seat on the council would become available as well, making four vacancies on the council.

On April 1, the citizens of Fruita spoke. Ken Henry was elected mayor and the voting for councilman went as follows:

Stacey Mascarenas — 1156 votes, Terry Moss — 1109 votes, Mel Mulder — 966 votes, Bob Fuller — 776 votes, Gordon Vetter – 727 votes, Trinidad Silva-657 votes, Howard Rosenauer – 517 votes and Fred Espinosa 426 votes.

As you can see by the numbers, the top four vote getters for council were Stacey Mascarenas, Terry Moss, Mel Mulder and Bob Fuller. The City Charter does not designate the process of replacing a councilman should he become mayor.

At the April 15 meeting, the council decided that of the top four vote getters, only the top three counted. City Council in fact decided that although Bob Fuller had the fourth-highest vote count, he was simply not qualified to become a city councilman, filling Ken Henry’s vacancy — although the citizens of Fruita seem to disagree with that position.

The question the citizens of Fruita should be asking is why didn’t their vote count for the fourth vacancy on council, as it did for the other three? What is the logic behind this process?

I don’t know Bob Fuller. However, I wonder what the new council members have against him that they are willing to forego the vote of record from the April 1 election. I would appreciate a written response of the truth, not placating comments that council members know best for the city of Fruita or that the citizens do not understand!

To Mayor Henry and Fruita City Council members I say: “Do the right thing.” Make sure the citizens know that when they vote in Fruita all votes count, regardless of whom you vote for!

Finally after weeks of being forced to endure the comments of members of the “Mesa County Know-Nothing Party” chaired by Willis_Leon_Johnson we actually get a comment of substance-written in an eminently readable and forthright style. Ms. Ginter you receive IV stars and a hearty bravo from this corner!

The comments deserve considerable review by the Council. Given the apparent schism between the new Mayor (Mr. Henry-a decent fellow if there ever was) and the recently departed Mr. Adams (a fellow Know Nothing party member and a bad loser to boot-nasty combination there Jimbo) and his group of supporters it would benefit the new council to look at the votes and make them count. A hard working candidate and first runner up like Mr. Fuller deserves to be seated on the council immediately.

Seems Mr. Vetter never really learned a worthwhile hobby in his 50’s that he could expand on into his golden years so he keeps trying to practice (quite porly) politics. Gordon please don’t go away mad-just GO away! Council please follow the votes of the people and seat Mr. Fuller or I may have to come to the IV and start flogging-some-more-of your-recalcitrant-bottoms.

    Sincerely,

    IM Floginbottoms IV
