The now-circulating draft bill to create the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area reflects a balanced solution for multiple uses and will give the BLM the funding and the mandate to create a management plan that serves everyone, include future generations.
The NCA’s management plan can provide lots of opportunities for thrilling and beautiful rides for motorized riders, campers and bicycle users. There will also be quiet, pristine places for hikes, archeology, high-quality hunting and fishing and photography. Protection for traditional uses such as ranching will also be written into the bill. There is plenty opportunity for everyone, as we continue our work together.
The pristine area of Dominguez North may require special attention, partly because so few people have adventured into this wild area. Part of the area just north of Dominguez should have designations reflecting the quiet nature of this place. As the plan stands now, the Tabeguache Trail, Cactus Park and Dad’s Flat roads, which are frequently used by bicycles and/or motorized users among other areas would remain open.
Let’s make sure this legislation reflects all user groups but also protects the fragile habitat and wildlife so important to community members in our communities.
Sen. Salazar is committed to reasonable, appropriate responses to the circumstances, resources, and broad diversity of opinion in western Colorado. His proposed legislation demonstrates those diverse interests. It does its best to balance for multiple uses of the land, while still leaving a legacy to pass on to future Americans.
It is impossible to please everyone with any proposal for public land but this proposal reflects all the stakeholder groups involved and gives everyone a slice of the pie.

To close off the Dominguez North Special Management Area with the stoke of a pen upon the bill passage is creating a defacto Wilderness Area. This idea did not recieve public concensus during the public meeting activity last fall. Any restrictions in this area should be done through the planning process involving the yet to be appointed advisory council and public input.

You are missing the point Chad.
Salazars office is trying to create a defacto Wilderness Area by closing 12,500 acres to multiple use, called the Dominguez Special Management Area. Instead of involving the public and the yet to be appointed advisory council, he intends to close it with the stroke of a pen upon passage of the bill for establishment of the NCA.

Misrepresentation of the proposed Dominguez North Special Management area is business as usual for the local environmental minds.
Also as usual they are taking the back door approach to close off 12,500 acres to multiple use. Such a closure should involve the public. Ken Salazar’s office, controled by the Western Colorado Congress, is proposing to close this area with the strike of a pen upon passage of the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area.
This separate 12,500 acre area deserves to have management actions of the yet to be appointed citizen advisory council, BLM and the public at large. any other method is wrong, sneaky and underhanded.

Even a closet hippie like myself has to admit, this sounds like a press release from J. Salazar’s office. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for some public input into such a closure. Public lands deserve public discussion.
