Last year a bill was passed to freeze the mill levy for school districts in Colorado and signed by Gov. Bill Ritter. This bill was sold as “not a tax increase,” so it didn’t have to be voted on by the taxpayers as required by the TABOR amendment. Mesa County’s House District 55 representative, Bernie Buescher, voted for it and claimed it was not a tax increase.
The homeowners and business owners in Mesa County will be paying much more in taxes because the county’s assessed evaluation has been going up and the mill levy should have gone down, but the mill levy for schools is frozen, causing your taxes to go up.
There has been a lawsuit filed against the governor and the State Board of Education. The education department is spending taxpayer dollars to defend this case, even though the state board never voted to do so.Board member Bob Schaffer would like to put this issue to the voters, but Pam Suckla, the chairwoman, doesn’t want to put this issue to the voters.
This is another case of Bob Schaffer, our next senator from Colorado, being on the correct side of an important issue.
Bob is very articulate and very knowledgeable on the issues. Bob knows our Constitution and our history as a nation.
The noted historian David McCullough said “a nation that doesn’t know it’s history is doomed.” He also said “We have to do a better job of teaching our students about the founding fathers and where our country really came from.”
Bob Schaffer knows our history very well and this will help him become our next senator from Colorado.

Bob Who? Oh, that guy over the hill in management at Aspect Energy. The one they call “Big Oil Bob” (see http://bigoilbob.com/). The one who uses all those freshly-scrubbed schoolkids way under age 18 in his lame-o TV ads?
seems like you got your quote wrong also - the appropriate quote would be:
“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” (George Santayana)
Think: eight years of George W. Bush followed by the prospect of John McCain as president, and a senator like Bob. That’s some kind of scary furture, ain’t it.
Wasn’t our late great guvnor Bill Owens an oil lobbyist also? Man, they’re everywhere.

He was not quoting George Santayana, he quite plainly stated it was a quote from David McCullough.

gfbyers,
you must remember that in dealing with people of “chanchos” capabilities that you need to be aware that he is only one of the many American people who are not doing their job either.
All too many of them do not want to do the work necessary to inform themselves as to reality.
Too many sit in front of a television or listen to radio waiting for “pre-digested” or “spun” information, all too often disgorged by individuals who do not understand the subjects they are talking about.
The public, is therefore content to be fed pablum, as if they were still toddlers, or infants.
There are several on this board, of the same genre.
No names or aliases are needed to identify them as they are readily identifiable.

[Proudly raises hand]. I believe that Wilted-Johnson may be referring to me among his lump. I do not get my ‘news’ from World Net Daily. I do read the Sentinel though (LOL!) and that at least keeps me up-to-date on Gary Harmon!

One has to appreciate the irony when one’s arguments or words are used (almost verbatim) by an opponent in order to make THEIR point. While the “echo” may be irritating it does prove that such individuals have no real arguments or even vocabulary of their own. Perhaps it is not nice to do but, being interested in the incestuosness of what transpires on some boards, I have even made up a word or two (in quotes)and sent them out over the boards. Lo and behold if those “constructed” words were not then used by others, not only devoid of their original meanings (abundantly clear when I initially created them), but also totally out of context. While it may be amusing, it is also quite disturbing.

Ahhh, the irony of having ones words used nearly verbatim to accurately describe those who originally used them while attempting to disparage their opponents.
And while it may be “not nice” to plagiarize one such as your self, the words fit so well.
Now, about my question:
What institutions of higher learning have you attended, and what specific degrees have you earned that allows you to feel smarter than anybody else?
And, since you have been known to be less than honest in your posts, I require names and dates for verification.
By your continued refusal to answer I can only surmise that you are a self taught individual that is incapable honest, intelligent conversation and need to rely on childish attempts at character assassination and belittling others to make yourself seem more intelligent than you actually are.
If facts that prove your positions false arise, you feel perfectly within your rights to discount any facts that you choose to not believe, then base your arguments on your self imposed ignorance of those facts.
Your own words show you to be more dishonorable than honest.
So, an answer please?
Or admit that you are less than you would pretend.

What John Justman is not disclosing is that he’s an ally and running buddy of Mesa County Commissioner Craig Meis, who was instrumental in authorizing Mesa County’s participation in the lawsuit against the state Board of Education. Justman also failed to mention that Bob Schaffer is being investigated for his ties to jailed Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Schaffer has about as much chance to become Colorado’s next Senator as John McCain has to become president.

I guess, by WLJs’ reckoning, Abraham Lincoln had no intellectual credibility. Geez, I thought he was pretty smart.

interestin,
dc thinks laitres is an equal to Abraham Lincoln.
Yet Honest Abe was,… well HONEST.
Mr. Laitres has not expressed an honest thought on here, only trashing those who choose to have a different opinion.
Much like dc and oliver, nothing worth discussing, just sniping from the sidelines.
Or, more apt, since they descended from apes, acting like trained monkeys at the whim of the pack leaders.
But I guess it makes them feel good, and it’s all about “feeling”.
I noticed years ago that feeling is a lot different than “THINKING”.

My students and I have been reading posts on this forum for the last week or so as they work on writing effective and strong letters to an editor. Willis has been both educational and entertaining for them; he has taught them quite a bit about what one shouldn’t do in a letter to the editor. For example, failing to establish ethos by not bothering to proofread a reply before submitting it. We’ve also had a good time identifying specific logical fallacies in Willis’ posts (Argumentum Ad Hominem being the most common). Since my doctorate is only in English, I realize I’m not qualified (by Willis standards) to comment on the specific issues under discussion in these posts, so I’ll limit them to just the rhetorical. Thanks again, Willis.

awww, now joelm, are you doing this for the kids?
OK, here’s a detail you left out.
The topic of this thread is: “Bob Schaffer is on the right side of issues.”
I’m not the person that took this line off topic, I only responded to off topic drivel from those who did.
Your post was off topic, so I’m assuming that you are teaching your students to go off topic and ramble incessantly to distract from the topic?
You are employed by the local government indoctrination centers here in Happy Valley?
‘Splain why so many children are illiterate with limited reading skills, poor grammar, and a weak vocabulary.
You did say your “doctorate” in in English?
Does this mean that you’re not very good at your job?

Another of the trained monkeys plays on the keyboard.
Nothing worth reading, just sniping from the sidelines.

Willis, Willis, Willis…you’re making this too easy. It’s like playing RISK with your dog. Sure, it’s fun, but eventually, it gets boring, and he ends up peeing on the game board.
You do know that joelm is using “doctorate” is an actual term, right? It’s not some kind of convoluted verb.
And, I hate (ok, I don’t hate, but let’s skip over that) to point out:
If someone says you’re going to respond to a comment by jumping up and down, screeching, and hurling feces like the pride of the Primate House; and then you respond by jumping up and down, screeching, and hurling feces like the pride of the Primate House, and you call that person a trained monkey…who exactly is holding the banana?

Poor curmie, sometimes he forgets that I descended from HUMANS.
And yes, I know what a PhD is.
I also know that he mentioned his “doctorate” in an effort to impress me.
But, if he truly has a “doctorate” why is he allowing poorly educated young people to progress past his classroom?
Are we still on topic Curmudgeon?
Or are you holding us here for a reason?

Curmudgeon: I not that you have picked up a “tail”, and apparently the same one I have. The individual apparently likes that position. Would that he appreciated where a tail is located on the anatomy; i.e. what other body part is in its proximity. But, that is a choice we all have, and there is no accounting for taste, is there?

Joelm: Yes, but not only form is learned from the individual to whom you refer. There is also a consistent lack of substance as well as an underlying tone of “absolutism” an unarguably a total lack of perspective. The standard of the individual is apparently “I am right, and that’s it.”
Note: I hope your students do not pick up any bad habits such as misspellings or improperly formulated and constructed sentences from my own posts.

Better be careful, RLaires…remember…He Knows Where You Live.
Besides, he doesn’t believe in the whole “humans having tails” thing, remember? He was descended from humans. From a different planet. One that’s only about 6,000 years old, too, I’ll bet.

Curmudgeon: So, he knows where I live. I do not hide, nor am I overly impressed, and certainly not easily intimidates. Having been shot at, having had a knife to my throat and gun to my head (without even having left the contiguous 48 states) there is no way that I am not about to allow myself by anyone who has to resort to using “brownshirt” or KKK tactics. I know history all too well, and what happens in society and in a country, when the “bullies” are allowed to to silence others.

Here’s the trick. Examine, if you will, the evidence. Go back up and reread posts #8 and #9. I made a comment about WLJ demanding evidence of college education to justify the intellectual standing to make a comment on this blog. I referred to someone in the past who had enormous intellectual standing without benefit of a diploma. At what point did I compare Abraham Lincoln to anybody?
This technique is often employed by those with no real argument ( Rush Limbaugh is particularly good at it.). He did not respond to what I said. He made up something and responded to his made up comment.
Do you ever wonder, WLJ, why no one takes you seriously? But, rave on anyway, sir. It is better entertainment than American Idol or the 700 Club.
