This year, more than 3 million men, women and youngsters nationwide will volunteer their time and talents to the American Cancer Society and its mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.
I am proud to say we have our share of these terrific individuals right here in Grand Junction, and, with National Volunteer Week now upon us, what better time to recognize and honor them.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Cancer Society. In Mesa County, we depend on our many volunteers to help organize our many programs, events and services.
These include The Daffodil Days fundraiser and our many advocacy, educational and patient-service programs, such as:
3 Road To Recovery (driving patients to their treatments).
3 Look Good, Feel Better (cosmetology specialists assisting patients with cancer-related effects and providing wigs, hats and makeup for the patients).
3 Reach to Recovery (survivors assisting newly diagnosed breast cancer patients).
3 Support groups for breast cancer and prostate cancer patients.
3 Relay For Life Events in Grand Junction (June 13 and 14) and Fruita (August 1 and 2).
3 Office volunteers who assist many projects and help patients find informational materials or items from our wig salon.
Cancer continues to be defeated, primarily through the advancements in research being accomplished throughout our nation. The American Cancer Society can continue to direct its financial resources to this research because of the unselfish time our millions of volunteers continue to offer.
Again, a sincere “Thank you” to our many volunteers in Mesa County, and thanks to the Botanical Gardens for hosting our volunteer- appreciation open house, April 29.

Clinton couple has been
a disgrace to the nation
I was disappointed in reading Henrietta Hay’s column headlined, “It’s time for a first woman president.” Has she forgotten all the lies and deceptions that occurred during the Clinton Administration? We don’t want a woman at any price, especially Hillary.
The Clinton’s entertained the Chinese in the White House for large sums of money. Norman Hsu was a Democratic fundraiser who was recently discovered at the Grand Junction train station, fleeing from the law. He is now incarcerated. When Hillary heard this, she returned a small amount of money to charity, feigning innocence.
How about Hillary’s $100,000 windfall in cattle futures? Again, she was an innocent victim.
And then there was Bill Clinton and his involvement with a White House intern, as well as Paula Jones. Who knows how many dalliances and immoral acts were carried on in our White House? Bill lied and Hillary, in defending him, claimed he was a victim of the right-wing conspiracy After he confessed, Hillary claimed innocence. She is very astute in portraying the innocent victim.
The Clinton legacy was dishonor and disgrace. They are both deceitful and prevaricators and are unworthy to lead this country.
When they left the White House, they took things that didn’t belong to them, which they later returned.
Wake up, America! Do you really want reruns of the Clinton antics?
As honest Abe Lincoln once said, “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all the people all of the time.” I hope we have matured enough to realize we want leaders who are honest, have Christian values and morals to bring dignity to our country.
