This is a note to sportsmen and hunters about the issue of killing prairie dogs or any animal for “sport.”
I believe that God gives us dominion over all other animals, not so we can cause pain and death for fun just because it’s legal.
What is truly right? We should look forward and use compassion the Lord gives us to do what we know Jesus would want us to do.
I hear there is a big fear of losing rights to kill, especially for our children and future generations. If compassion and foresight are not used now, there will be no wildlife and nowhere left to kill or see them for future generations.
Prairie dogs have hearts, brains, nervous systems, blood and families. They do not deserve to be used for target practice because they are helpless. Please give their lives some respectful thought, as some of God’s own creatures, before you go and exercise you legal right to kill next time.
I fear what God will do to humans for our evil.

I agree, prairie dogs are sacred (and help sustain a large coyote population, which, hopefully will eat my neighbors yapping Pomerainians), like every other living thing.
But, does that same God approve of & “give dominion” for torturing and killing innocent PEOPLE around the world? Say, for example, the US government decides to agressively occupy another (unamed) country for 5 years or more based on lies and a big marketing campaign….but, they like to refer to it as a “war”…and the “enemies” are all labeled “insurgents” thus, subject to butalization & death, even though they had nothing to do with anything vaguely related to the US.
I, too, fear what God or Zeus will do to humans for our evil

Chancho,
Kind of like labeling people “infidels” isn’t it? I guess what goes around comes around. I’m still PO’d about those Romans feeding Christians to the lions. I guess it all boils down to which came first, the chicken or the egg.
Stop killing? Easy, just change human nature. The only successes so far have been in the development of weapons that give us more bang for the buck. Or maybe somebody is just mad about all the people who have been killed by the plague. After all, the prairie dogs do harbor these little flea terrorists and feed them. As for myself, I try to be polite to anyone who can take out a prairie dog at 600 yards in a fifteen mile an hour crosswind on a thirty-eight degree down slope. I guess I’m just a prudent kind of guy.

Gotcha. ‘Cause shooting an unarmed rodent makes you a baaaaad dude, right?
I’d be more impressed with this person that american patriot (SAH-Loot!) is so eager to bow down to (Oh, my….that gun is SOOOO big!!!) if the prairie dogs were shooting back at him. I guess I’m just not impressed by a pile of dead varmints.

Crumdgeon
The pesticide industry, and the manufacturers of mouse and rat traps, is not only a multimillion dollar business in America, but they have been in business for a long time. Why do you think that is so? Why are cockroaches easier to kill than prairie dogs? Is the reason that we kill more plants than animals because they don’t scream? Is it ethical to indiscriminately support state sponsored genocide of the Tamaracks? It is about different strokes for different folks. How much credibility would someone have if they tried to force you, by law, to stop killing vegetables, or stop using herbicides, or possibly burning the weeds to death on your ditches? That’s the problem with Political Correctness. It only considers one point of view. Usually, a minority point of view.

ya know curmie, usually you have something intelligent to say, but today you are just down to rude and obnoxious.
Does it make you feel good to stoop to your current level?
Is there any value to your non useful comments?
I expect it from dc and chancho, because seldom are they coherent, but you always, somehow, managed to be above this type of garbage.

Letters like this really open up some wonderful moral & ethical questions.
To dissect it, Tina says “I believe that God gives us dominion over all other animals….” Does this imply that the “us” part, we, are simply not animals? But, I thought we were living beings, sorta animal/monkey-like in a strange way, also?
What is the real purpose of “dominion”? Could it be as simple as dominance and/or control over people, people’s minds, hogs, cockroaches, oil, land, water, etc.?
Therefore, terrorization, brutalization, maiming and death of other animals (including people) are acceptable only if we, US, the ones armed with the religion d’jour (and the largest caliber gun) decide what is right/wrong since this was handed down as the inspired word of God?
Further, says Tina: “What is truely right? We should look forward and use compassion the Lord gives us to do what we know Jesus would want us to do.”
What is truly right? What would Jesus do? Compassion?

Simple. I carried a gun for too long. Gun fetishists annoy me. I got no problem with hunters. Prairie Dog shoots are not hunting. It’s “sport”. It’s not criminal, it’s not illegal…it’s just lame.
As for stooping to low levels of insults, name calling, innuendo, veiled threats, and rude and obnoxious behavior, your passing judgment on anyone is so hypocritical, it’s downright comical. You’re either a hypocrite, or a liar.
When y’all do it, we’re just crybaby liberals who can’t handle a good fight.
When we do it, y’all cry foul, claim the high road, in complete denial of things you’ve posted, and skitter away. Y’know, like Prairie Dogs. We’re just hunting. For sport. Nothing wrong with that, right?
Be the big, bad, rough, tough man you’re always portraying in your comments. Stop crying just because and your kin are getting smacked back, now. Go ahead and let me have it. Type away, under as many screen names as you can make up. It’s a free country, after all. Just stop whining.

Prarie Dogs carry disease, that is not an opinion it is a fact. One of diseases common in the Prarie Dog is responsible for killing millions of people is called the bubonic plague. There is plague in the Prarie Dog population in the Grand Valley. If this were a discussion involving the killing of rats (different variety of vermin)there probably would be far fewer individuals protesting. Because people think Prarie Dogs are cute and cuddly little creatures and not the vermin thay actually are, we get to hear how it is horrible to kill them. In the last year plague infested Prarie Dogs were quietly removed from a field in the Fruita area, which happened to border a large subdivision in the city. Perhaps if the individuals who are so averse to the killing of pests were to research how the plague would effect their health they might change their minds. If the protesters were to find out there was an infestation of rats in their midst would they want the rats to be left alone?

Willis,
Remember message received and understood? Now would be that time. Well Done.

Actually, I don’t believe in hunting for “sport”. I just don’t feel that an animal who carries bubonic plague, rabies, and who knows what else, should not be classed as something to be exalted. If we got the populations under control, we could manage the diseases they carry. When there are too many “rats” in the cage, then Mother Nature takes care of the problem her own cold, cruel way. If we don’t want her to do the same with us, then we too had better wake up.

Chicken or egg? No brainer, it has to be the egg. Altered DNA is passed onto the next generation in the egg.
Bubonic Plague is bacterial and can be taken care of immediately with antibiotics. It is not deadly and is not caused by prairie dogs, it is carried by fleas. SO if you have a dog or cat with fleas, then you have a chance of getting it through them. Oh, prairie dogs do not carry rabies. But your family pet can.
The only crime these prairie dogs have committed is to try to survive in a place that a human wants to build, of all things, a parking lot. Yeah, that is enough reason to kill something so you can park your car. Uh huh….NOT.

Hey Willis,
That slam in #5 was kind of uncalled for, don’t you think? How about leaving the personal insults out of this, particularly since I haven’t posted a word on this subject. It is that penchant for personal attacks that have damaged your credibility. You are the only person who has ever challenged my “coherence”.
The fact is, I have a tendency to agree with your position on this. But your crummy attitude leads me to believe that you are not a very nice man. A pity, since you appear to be educated.

fblong states that as a justification for killing prairie dogs that they carry a host of diseases including plague. Actually it is the fleas that carry the microbes which cause plague. But I have news for him. It is a fact that humans carry a wide variety of nasty, transmissable diseases including HIV, polio, tuberculosis, etc. etc. By Fblong’s tortured reasoning we should kill them all!

Class of 52 the fleas transmit plague because they have been feeding on the Prarie Dogs blood. And when did I ever indicate that I thought the human race was considered vermin? By using your tortured reasoning I am now pushing for something akin to Hitler’s final solution. You are wrong and I am apalled you would even suggest the idea. In no way do I advocate the killing of humans who are ill.

Well, it ain’t a sport, and it ain’t huntin’ or fishin’ then it must be training on how to handle a long range, live target shot.
Early sniper school.
But, then again, it does help out the farmers and ranchers, and protects their livestock from injuries caused by prairie dog holes, and it cuts down on the loss of crops due to prairie dog infestations.
And yes, infestation is the correct word.
