I was shocked and dismayed at the poor judgment on the part of the Colorado Division of Wildlife staff and the Colorado Wildlife Commissioners to continue to allow prairie dogs to be utilized for live target practice, in particular for youth, as advocated the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance.
The commission’s short-sightedness omits very well-documented information relating animal abuse to youth violence (see the study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2001) and further adds to growing problems for our collective families.
A study in 2000 substantiated that following nine school shootings in United States in the late 1990s, including the school only 250 miles away from Grand Junction, violence towards animals was shared by nearly half of the shooters. Additionally, all of these boys were fascinated by guns and explosives and had easy access to firearms.
It is recklessness on the part of those who promote violence and encourage others to share this extremist habit. I, for one, think the children and prairie dogs of Colorado deserve much better.

When I was a college student I remember a book at the CSU bookstore called “How to Lie with Statistics”. I am guessing that Lori Colt must have been the author.

Wow, you know my opinions on gun-fetishists, mighty Prairie Dog slayers, and lame justifications for blowing up critters has been well documented, but..
come on. This one stretches logic to the point of snapping back in the writer’s face.
The shooters at Columbine were NOT hunters, or organized target shooters, or any one of the types I make fun of for being so excited about shootin’ Prairie Dogs. They were maladjusted, misguided, anti-social cowards. They didn’t want to hunt animals. They wanted to take ‘revenge’ on innocent students, mostly girls who wouldn’t go out with them.
Linking Prairie Dog hunts to Columbine is as silly as pretending that it’s for any other purpose than the thrill of killing a critter. No, strike that…it’s sillier.
