The article in the May 18 edition of The Daily Sentinel from Chicago, concerning the cost of food and the amount of it that the people are able to purchase with their food stamps, definitely had the “perfect” picture attached to it. The woman in that picture had to weigh at least 300 pounds or I’ll take my nickel out. Please, was that editor trying to be ironic? Or just silly?

I read your letter and I couldn’t agree more. It seems like they pick the worst examples. Of course, they also get free food at the local food banks, Catholic Outreach, commodities, etc. which give food out (not the most nutritional either) to anyone who can fill out the papers.
And of course, one of the sources that they don’t recognize is “all you can eat and steal Wednesday” at the local supermarket.

“All you can eat and steal Wednesday”? What? How come I wasn’t notified of this? Seriously, grandma, I’m not mocking you….would you explain that one, please? I’ve never heard of it.

    Curmudgeon,
You mean when you picked up your food stamps, you weren’t given the paper that explained all of this? Tell me you haven’t seen Oreo cookie crumbs littering the store isles. How do you think those packages get open? When you have only food stamps, you need more food, and the evolutionary product of that is that you open and eat all you can before you get to the check out stand.
    Ask the store owners.

  4. Curmudgeon

Well, that’s a new one on me. Maybe my store has better loss prevention. Thanks for the explanation, though.

Ask your local store manager why they had to take out the unwrapped bulk food bins.

Too many illegals were taking their kids out for lunch, dinner, breakfast, etc and letting them reach in and grab a handful.

What they didn’t like, they threw back.

They have lots of video tape. Ask if you can see it sometime.

WLJ: “Too many illegals were taking their kids out for lunch, dinner, breakfast, etc and letting them reach in and grab a handful.”

Illegals? How did illegals get into this discussion? Looks like a clear case of WLJ bigotry.

Most of the names I read in the Sentinel of those arrested for shoplifting are not Hispanic.

poor gene, all out of stuff to respond with and down to slapping labels on people.

I can play, which label would you like first gene?

RACIST? liberals always assume that minorities are incapable of doing anything on their own, but must rely on those generous souls in the far left, whacky wing of the democrat party.

There was nothing bigoted in my statement, but there was a whole lot of really stupid in your comment.

  8. Curmudgeon

Ok, I don’t doubt you folks saw what you say saw, but how did you know they were illegals?

  9. Curmudgeon

oops. “saw what you say you saw,” I should have said.

  10. grandmasix

    Crumudgeon,
The were stealing cookies. Isn’t that illegal, or has theft, like crossing our borders, been covered by amnesty?
Does the Keebler cookie company and the Elves know about this?
Does anyone out there know how to translate, “Nadie me vio haceius, no puede arnostriar una cosa?

  11. one.voice

    Grandmasix,
Roughly translated, it means, Nobody saw me do it, you can’t prove a thing.

maybe they didn’t speak English to the cameras?

Just going by what I was told by a local area supermarket manager.

Probably not a good enough ’source’, but at least I spelled it right.

  13. Curmudgeon

Fair enough. As I said before, I don’t doubt the veracity of what you and grandma saw…I just wanted to know how you knew the culprits were illegal aliens, and that answered the question.

    Sugarfoot,
On another post you indicated that you weren’t familiar with Proteus. Proteus is a rod shaped bacterium associated with enteritis and urinary tract infections, according to the Encarta Dictionary.
I believe a majority will agree that this is an accurate definition.

  15. Classof52

You do not know what you are talking about One voice. In order to be an organism, you would have to give us the generic and specific names.

I am reasonably sure that our Proteus derives his name from the mythological sea-god.In Greek mythology, Proteus is an early sea-god, one of several deities whom Homer calls the “Old Man of the Sea”, He can foretell the future, but, in a mytheme familiar from several cultures, will change his shape to avoid having to; he will answer only to someone who is capable of capturing him. From this feature of Proteus comes the adjective protean, with the general meaning of “versatile”, “mutable”, “capable of assuming many forms”: “Protean” has positive connotations of flexibility, versatility and adaptability. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proteus

I believe a majority will agree that this is an accurate definition of the Proteus who graces our little forum

  16. orpheus

Proteus did confirm this in another thread.

  17. Curmudgeon

I thought Proteus left after one.voice slapped him down with the whole “Jesus Nut” thing (my wife, with no military service, but whose uncle was Marine Force Recon, knew about it). I thought it was kind of funny.
    Anyways….

BACK to the original letter …

Poverty and obesity go hand in hand for a reason. The cheapest food is also usually the fattiest, most sugary, most highly processed.

    Just something to chew on.
