Please consider your pet. In light of financial difficulties of foreclosures and high gas prices, I would like to elaborate on an increase in the dumping of family and long-time animal friends.

We live in a desert area, and in the past few weeks, we have had five dogs come into our place looking for food or water, after they were driven to the desert and dumped. We usually get one or two dogs a year and four or five cats with kittens and more litters of kittens, which are not able to fiend for themselves.

Also, friends of mine who love to visit the desert, recently found a golden retriever and two Labradors. These poor animals were hungry and thirsty. They were approximately 10 miles out from the last residence. It is obvious these animals have been taken to this remote area with the intention and knowledge that they will die horrible deaths.

To those of you who feel it necessary to take animals and dump them in the middle of nowhere, have you considered the horrible death of these animals? With high temperatures and no water, they dehydrate or starve and die or may become killed and eaten by lions, coyotes or bears or become target practice for ruthless and gun-happy people.

We do have Mesa County Animal Services, which has a policy of accepting any animal released to them. The Colorado Humane Society, The Humane Society of Western Colorado and Roice Hurst Humane Society will also accept animals. You may hang an advertisement with most of the 50 or so veterinarian hospitals or PetSmart, to help place your animal in a loving home.

Additionally and most importantly spay and/or neuter your pets. Financial assistance is available at some of the above-named organizations or with project P.U.P.’s certificates.

If none of the above can help with placement, then do the humane thing and euthanize your pets and live knowing that they had a good life with you, their cherished owner. Please be responsible and humane. Don’t dump.
