I’m so pleased to live in a community that values its pet population enough to answer a call for help when it goes out.

Roice-Hurst Humane Society is a valuable asset to Mesa County. In 2007, according to statistics published by WeCARe, a coalition of animal welfare agencies in western Colorado, they took in 504 animals.

In addition to Roice-Hurst, we are fortunate to have several other animal welfare organizations to assist homeless animals. These include CLAWS, which took in 477 animals in 2007; Grand Rivers Humane, assisting 373 animals; and Community Cat Care, helping 651 animals, all right here in Mesa County.

Of course, Mesa County Animal Services deals with the large majority of animals. Last year, it took in 5,803 animals.

Our community is also aided by many organizations outside of Mesa County. In 2007, Mesa County Animal Services transferred a total of 1,180 animals to rescues and shelters in Colorado, largely with the help of Grand Rivers Humane.

Without ALL of these organizations, our community could not begin to address the needs of homeless pets. And, as with Roice-Hurst Humane Society, these organizations depend on donations from the citizens of Mesa County. Please remember that all of these groups need your support. I’m glad that lots of people gave their money to this place. They could have spent the money on themselves or gone to a movie, but now the dogs and cats can have a good place until someone adopts them.

We can’t have animals at our house because it makes the twins sick, and one time one of them had to go to the hospital for a few days, and it cost my parents a lot of money.
