Veterans, veteran’s families and friends of the military should not be deceived by Bernie Buescher’s latest attempt to convince the voters that he is pro military. “My father was just a grunt … and I couldn’t stand by and let the government deplete veteran funds … so I lead the effort to restore the money.”

In April of 2007, both houses of the Colorado legislature passed a joint resolution asking the president to oppose troop escalation and escalation of the war in Iraq. When it was time to take a stand for the military, Bernie sided with the Boulder Democrats and voted “Yes” while Penry and King voted “No.”

We veterans will not buy the lame excuse that Buescher was “for the troops but against the president.” During this senseless political act, some of Mesa County’s finest men and women were over there in harm’s way. The truly right thing to do would have been to go against the liberal Boulder Democrats and support the military. I can only assume Bernie didn’t understand anything about the values of loyalty, honor and service from his father the “grunt.” Voters beware.

Perhaps the original letter writer would care to correct me but, as I recall, Mr. Buescher is in the Colorado State Legislature, and not in the House of Representatives in Washington. The letter writer is stretching both the truth and significance of things beyond reality.

As to the ’support the troops’ argument that keeps ‘popping up’, let us look into it a little further. Many want the troops supported, not because they care at all about ‘the troops’, they want them supported to defend them so that they can ’shop in safety’ or just keep on doing what they have been doing unimpeded.

As the author of a recent book, The Limits of Power, stated in an interview, there is more to ’supporting the troops’ than just saying it, or as an opportunity to place a plastic yellow ribbon on their vehicles. You have to ‘care’ about the individual troop. How this type of ’support the troops’ hypocrisy has taken hold boggles the mind.

As an example, one individual had a son who recently left the navy. He went to the VA because of a medical problem. He was told that he ‘needed’ tests, but those had to be delayed because the VA did not have the funds to send the individual to either Salt Lake or Denver.

Now, when seeing something like this, I ask myself: “If our ’support the troops’ afficianados really ‘cared’ for the troops, would they not first insure that the funds to take care of them were available? But they don’t. Why not? Could it perhaps be that, while they want the protection afforded by ‘the troops’, they really don’t want to pay for it? What are such individuals waiting for? Are they waiting for the veterans, once they have fought the war, come back and pay for it also?

More from the Laura Bradford letter-writing group. Laura is such a lame candidate that the only way this group thinks they can get any traction is by trashing Bernie. Once more the old chestnut “Boulder Democrats” keeps popping up from the stale Dick Wadhams play book of silliness. Is this the best you can do, Carl? So Bernie doesn’t understand the values of loyalty, honor amd service? Mr. Boydston’s disgusting, insulting wallowing in the slime is only exceeded by Bradford’s desperation to hoodwink the public into thinking she has anything to offer other than mindless mud throwing and overwhelming ignorance and incompetence. These are supposedly mature adults? Vote for Laura to ensure that the Western Slope loses all credibility and power. Vote for Bernie for thoughtful, intelligent and influential representation. Is there a real choice here?
