John McCain works as hard as Barack Obama to distance himself from George Bush, but George Bush isn’t the only reason to vote for Obama. The real reason is a Republican strategy that goes all the way back to Richard Nixon.
It’s a strategy of cutting taxes, cutting regulations and cutting government spending, all on the theory that benefits will somehow trickle down to the rest of us. Instead, corporations have sent jobs overseas and made the remaining ones at home so unpleasant and insecure that it’s almost impossible to find anyone who likes their job, while the rich build houses for themselves with 45 rooms and eight bathrooms.
In the meantime, the roads have gone to heck. Education has gone to heck. Health care has gone to heck. Sarah Palin says the Wall Street crisis is a result of corporate greed but can’t bring herself to say the word “regulation.” McCain says corporations who screw up will go out of business and calls that fairness, with no regard for the employees, customers and communities who get hurt in the process.
McCain and Palin may turn their backs on George Bush, but they’re still pushing the same theory of economics and government. We’ve been living with that theory for most of the past thirty years, and we’ve got thirty years of evidence that it doesn’t work. It’s time for a real change.
