While canvassing for Sen. Barack Obama in Grand Junction this past weekend I was flabbergasted by the barrage of bigoted and racist comments streaming from the mouths of Grand Junction’s citizens.
This is the 21st century and I’m appalled that some of our nation’s citizens haven’t risen above this kind of hate. I must also question if Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. John McCain are perpetuating this hate when they erroneously try to associate Obama with terrorists.
It is also unfortunate to read The Daily Sentinel’s endorsement of these two candidates, who continue to spew lies in a desperate attempt to sway swing voters and keep the spotlight from the Bush/McCain deregulated economy.
Republican and retired Army Gen. Colin Powell has endorsed Obama, saying the McCain campaign has gone too far. Powell said, “I think it has made the McCain campaign look a little narrow. It’s not what the American people are looking for.”
I, for one, am looking beyond the hate I experienced and have hope for a better future.

Mr. Miller - The reception you received as an Obama supporter is not surprising. I don’t know how long you’ve resided in this “land that time forgot,” but you need to realize that the Grand Valley is one of the most socially, politically and religiously intolerant areas of the country. It’s a little piece of Mississippi just west of the Rockies.

Oh shucky darn, I dinnit realize that us backwood folk r so embarissin to yee.
Insult and entire region if they dont’ happen to support socialism, abortion on demand, trampling of the second ammendment, tax hikes during a recesion, moral relativism, etc……..Maybe the reason Ullr hasn’t converted more of his ingnorant redneck neighbors is because he calls them stupid and doen’t talk about policies.
And to the orinal point-negativity isn’t a one sided issue. Have you heard the things said about McCain and Palin? WOW. I haven’t heard such vitriol directed at a person in my young life.
I have been called a redneck, racist, bigot, hack, stupid, and a war monger right here in “the land that time forgot.” This for simply stating that I’m not voting for obama. I fear putting a bumper sticker on my car because I know it will get keyed like several sticker sporting friends have experienced. I was brave enough to put a yard sign out front and it was stolen. The second one was ripped to pieces. The third is still alive and strong though.
So is my hope in america, that has always been described as center right. I for one am glad I still live in “a land that San Fransisco” forgot.

We certainly hope the individual is not looking for sympathy. And, if one reads the contents of his posts, he may come to the realization that the only individual who needs to be embarassed, if himself about himself. He needs no assistance in that regard.

It is called sarcasm RL. Trying to have a little fun on the post. I don’t ask for any sympathy nor will I apologize for my state, city, or region. I live here because I like many aspects, including my fellow Junction residents that were so rudely and categorically dismissed. If you would are to discuss the topic at hand, I whole heartedly encourage you. If you would like to character assassinate and name call, go elsewhere please. Willis, your adoring sparing partner, isn’t in this forum.

Thank you, but I do recognize sarcasm. And, if the individual were to look at post #3, he was not “called” any names, nor was their any “character assassination” involved, his post was merely challenged. Now, he may wish to interpret it differently, but that is entirely up to him.

As much as people criticize the McCain/Palin campaign for encouraging their supporters to tie Obama to a terrorist, the Obama campaign has not found ANYTHING worthwhile to attack McCain and Palin on! They haven’t even bothered to attack McCain hardly, only his Vice President candidate…yet, if you have ever listened to Joe Biden speak, you will know he is surely not the most intelligent person. He would fit in QUITE well with the ‘ignorant rednecks’ that seem to be the majority in the Grand Valley. Watch this video for a little proof: http://www.wimp.com/stupidbiden
And as for a redneck region. Yes. We are. I don’t picture any yuppie Harvard Law grads busting their backs working 100+ hour work weeks up on the rigs…supporting the economy in this area. I ask yourself, no matter the industry you work in, in the Grand Valley, no one in this town would be able to survive if it weren’t for those ignorant rednecks.

Afternoon Dan,
I agree with you regarding the barrage of bigoted and racist comments streaming from the mouths of Grand Junction’s citizens. I attended the John McCain event at the Grand Junction Airport yesterday and was shocked to see the young lady at the roundabout holding an Obama sign while wearing a “Sarah Palin is a C**t” t-shirt.
As my wife and I walked in with our 13 and 9 year old daughters we were welcomed by a young group of Obama supporters screaming insults. They seemed to have difficulty speaking without dropping the f-bomb every other word, especially the two lads in the Mesa State sweat shirts. Was this what you were refering to when you said, ” I’m appalled that some of our nation’s citizens haven’t risen above this kind of hate”? If so then I concur 100%.
The door swings both ways. Just thought you’d like to know the whole story.

Hate is everywhere and on every “side.” When we tell stories about the “other” party being hateful, are we trying to justify the hate spewing from our “own” side? Or are we even, perhaps, making some of this stuff up? Rhetorical questions, all … no need to answer.

ash, the vitriol, sewage, whatever name you wish to call the garbage strewn by anybody is nasty and shows a definite lack of character, responsibility and maturity…and to think that our kids are coming to see this as normal behaviour

brandon_wsc: ” I for one am glad I still live in “a land that San Fransisco” forgot.”
Who is “San Fransisco”?
Looks like the overwhelming majority of voters in Colorado also forgot Mesa County. Our State voted for Obama with almost the same majority as the voters of California. Mesa County demonstrated that it is still a proponent of the old discredited Repoublican policies (fitting in the land of the Dinosaurs).

Plenty of people in this town do not derive any of their income from the oil and gas industry or its fallout. I am one of them. I remind you that according to Colorado government figures, the recreation and tourism industries contribute far more to the state economy than does the oil and gas activity.

Granted, I did not live here during the last oil bust, but I guarantee if they stop drilling in this area, restaurants will have very few people to serve. Gas stations wouldn’t have anyone to sell gas too. Lawyers wouldn’t have anyone to defend. Teachers wouldn’t have anyone to teach.
Oil and Gas feeds my family AND YOURS. I am a hard working American. I am 22 years old, and I do know hard work. My husband leaves for Iraq in 2 weeks, and I worked 65 hours last week, because the military does not pay enough for us to make ends meet on his salary alone. But when he is home, working in the oil fields, we do just fine and I don’t have to rack up 20+ hours of overtime.

And I do work for an oil field company. And I don’t have a secretaries job. I work with cement and chemicals and do things that the Obama supporters in this state wouldn’t dream of. I get my hands dirty every day. And I am DANG proud of my redneck status.
