It never ceases to amaze me what relatively minor points people will make as justification for not supporting major needed projects. In this case, I am referring to the school bond issue.
I am tired of reading, particularly in the anonymous You Said It, continuing criticism of the District’s gift of $1 million to Mesa State. Most people are unaware that this was only 1/43rd of the total cost of the Saunders project. A project that includes not just the soccer field, but a softball stadium, 50-meter competition pool, football and baseball practice fields and an improved arena for basketball, volleyball and wrestling. All these venues are used by our area athletes. Can you imagine what the District would have had to spend to duplicate these facilities? In short, this was a great deal.
We seem to forget about all the other uses and partnerships that our local youth get to enjoy. o one talks about the $700,000 new track and field facility the college is building at Grand Junction High School. We don’t hear about the college hosting the Colorado Music Festival for high school students every year, nor the college hosting the annual Western Colorado Alpine Bank Science Fair by providing both free facilities and staff to organize and run the event.
I have faith that the voters of this valley are farsighted and recognize the future needs, and in some cases the near future needs, to provide for continued quality education of our citizens of the future. I, for one, am voting FOR ISSUES 3A and 3B.
