As a city of Fruita resident, I was shocked and angered to learn that the majority of support for the “Fruita Citizens for Common Sense,” an opposition group for the proposed Fruita Community Center, is coming from Grand Junction fitness clubs.
A recent report of contributions and expenditures filed with the state of Colorado Elections Division shows that 60 percent of the cash raised by nine contributors to the organization was directly contributed by Grand Junction fitness clubs including: 1-2-3 fit, The Grand Junction Athletic Club, and B & K Enterprises, which operates Kidzplex. I wonder who exactly the “Fruita Citizens for Common Sense” really are.
This group is responsible for mailings with false information on construction costs, admission fees and the actual sales-tax increase itself. I have tracked my common purchases in Fruita and a 1 percent sales-tax increase exempting groceries, gas and prescriptions would cost my family approximately 1.5 cents more a week than it does now. A community center is certainly worth it.
My children love Kidzplex. We have attended gymnastics, Kindermusik and held many birthday parties in the Fun Factory. We would have gladly supported their business and the Fruita Community Center. I am so saddened by their involvement in this campaign that we will no longer visit the facility.
The proposed community center is so much more than fitness. My family is very excited about a new and expanded library as well as meeting/event rooms that would eliminate the drive to Grand Junction. I know of seniors who would benefit from the activities available in the Senior Center free of charge. I encourage all Fruita residents to track their spending and get the facts about the proposed community center – it truly will be the best deal in town.
