Dumb old Bush made a documented 17 attempts to get the Democrats to REGULATE their precious Fanny and Freddie. McCain actually sponsored legislation. Barak says he went to have a TALK with the Fed. But was not willing to face down his party when he knew they were running amok. Pelosi and Reed will be leading him around by the… hand. It is not free market capitalism that failed. It was interfered with by political correctness. Good intentions. Standard mortgage procedures were done away with. Nothing like a do-gooder, know-it-all to mess things up. nativegal, read the CRA and tell us how it endorses or recommends sub-prime loans.It is about keeping creditworthy people from being “redlined” because of the neighborhoods they live in and discriminated against from either getting a loan at all or having disadvantageous terms being applied if they are offerd a loan. You have been sucked in by the ultra-conservative desperate talking points trying to deflect the blame, willingly, it appears. To their discredit, Fannie and Freddie did buy some sub-prime loans but no where near the percentage held by others. The sub-prime fiasco was only a small part of what was a over-valued market fed by easy money and the bubble burst. Sub-prime was a mnority of supposedly mostly good loans based on loose and sometimes fraudulent terms. The whole thing is a result of an overall financial market that has developed over the last thirty plus years based on minimal regulation and maximal pushing the boundaries of intelligent risk assessment and management. And that is a very Republican thing, regardless of where you are getting your information. The prime guru in all this has been Alan Greenspan who just last week testified that he has been horribly wrong that markets can more or less regulate themselves. You are free to believe whatever you want but that doesn’t make it correct. The ones who have strangled us are on their way out.Finally!

NativeGal - If you “fact check” the Community Reinvestment Act, you will find that it was developed to counter the illegal practice of “redlining” prevalent in the 60’s and 70’s, and had NOTHING to do with the subprime mess.

The Community Reinvestment Act, implemented in the Carter Administration and refined during the Clinton administration set up the sub-prime mortgage disaster that cracked the foundation of our economy. They are trying to distract us from that truth. But I thank these people for continuing to illustrate my point: that they are elitists that believe they know what is best for us dumb commoners. They are lawyers and they will use to law to strangle us. Like I said, just wait till they get us into a Super-Majority hold and bolt on the nanny state. I’m warning you!

nativegal, How connected to “real” life? Actually, very. Try to do much of anything without legal help. Yes, dealing with the legal system is often a pain in the butt, but what is the alternative? We are in the midst of troubles caused by those who believe in minimal laws and regulations and faith that people will do the right thing, the economic system is always self-righting and there is minimal tendency in “human nature” to break the rules if no one is watching. Remember, the sainted Fathers of our Country that are so revered for their wisdom in putting our country together were not “good old boys” but the elite of the time and most were extremely well educated, particulrly for the time. You seem to be implying that the country would be better off with minimally educated “regular folks” running things with common sense and intuition. That’s not what works in the business world and this country is far, far more complex than any corporation. I’d say Harvard Law Revue trumps 5th from the bottom of the class at Annapolis that Daddy got him into because it was a family tradition. We’ll forget about the rest of the mediocrity in much of the McCain resume’. By the way, better do some honest research on how we got into the mortgage mess and who the players were. Fox News, Hannity and Limbaugh,etc. isn’t real research. Also research what the primary economic thrust has been over the last thirty years or so, how it related to our current crisis and who was behind it. Same sources mentioned are not real research.

To Ullr: Thanks for being an excellent example of the elite appeal of Obama. How connected to real life is the Harvard Law Review? It would take a sense of humor to appreciate “first dude,” and red blood flowing in your veins to understand hunting. Ivory-tower politically-correct governing led to the sub-prime loan mess, and Freddie and Fannie crashing, which lands soundly in the Democrats laps.
