Politicians never surprise me, especially the lame ducks. Take Bernie Buescher for example.

This guy gets trounced in the public polls, but after years of feeding from the public trough, he is unwilling to find a job like the folks he used to represent. Nope Bernie feels he must continue feeding from the public money pipe, sort of like he deserves it.

He reminds me of the shades of other like ilk, Barbara Brewer comes to mind.

I wonder who Mr. Scott has in mind to do the public’s business. Or do we not need anybody? If I’m not mistaken Bernie is semi-retired, financially secure and not in need of a job. Of all the people in the state it’s hard to imagine a more selfless individual in public service. Trounced? I hardly think so considering the preponderance of registered Republicans locally. No bias at all in Mr. Scott’s strange letter.

Government service is like any other profession in that there is a learning curve. Knowing the turf, the players, the rules, the tools, and many other aspects of the job is one reason it is sometimes wise to re-elect a good public servant.

Does Mr. Scott feel the same way about the numerous Mesa State jobs that have been filled by failed Republican politicians? Neither party has a problem with taking care of experienced colleagues if a suitable job is open. This is just a cheap shot at Bernie Buescher. Bernie is certainly more qualified for either job than I, so I don’t think I will question the Governors action.

Attitudes like this are exactly why bi-partisan bickering happens. The lathering of disrespect that this person oozes is not only unproductive of change toward a more efficient and cost effective government (which I suspect the person favors and which anyone in their right mind favors) but is also a statement that undoubtedly roils democrats at republicans because of the seemingly stereotypical jackass “neo” conservative mindset behind the statement. Two strikes against playing nice, if we strike out then at least we know what made us hesitate when it came to cooperation.

Could it be possible that intellectual laziness is creating our state of mind numbing idiotic actions by our congress? the same kind of intellectual laziness that we confront in a letter such as this one demonstrates a refusal to look any deeper than the facade of government and how it works to point out the culprit. the problems of our government are not intrinsically linked to beliefs and governmental philosophies of those who are currently in power. but if this is true then how could the system continue to flounder? of course the government is linked but it can’t be intrinsic because no one likes how the government is working. maybe they don’t want to be blamed for changing things and having the recovery be painful. maybe they just have no idea what to do. one thing is certain our awful predicament is a compilation of poor judgement of the past as well as some good judgment of the past (very little of this but maybe some). frustration at a system long neglected by the majority of citizens and then having the majority of those neglectful citizens also angry because their government performs as if it has been terribly neglected just proves that if you take a lazi approach to your analysis of government then you will probably take a lazi approach in your reaction to the problem. Lazi in, Lazi out. people are so lazi. Maybe Bernie is a poor representative, maybe not. Regardless, he does not embody ALL the failures of the current system and should not be treated as if he does. And if you are seriously accusing this guy of simply wanting to suck off the government tit and collect a representative pay, that would be one elaborate hoax and certainly deserves to be remembered with a good Rodney Dangerfield movies like caddy shack but instead it would star Buescher and he would be talking about things like veterans affairs and education. It would be a real hilarious show. Dick, stop allowing your name to decide how you approach people and try suggesting a few good actions that should be considered that bernie didn’t pose and then chastise him for that, at least then you could be demonstrating what he should have done rather than he saying that “that damn bernie buescher just flat out sucks!” (queue baby crying)

    david,

Well said. The malaise that makes our government so dysfunctional, IMHO, is the overpowering influence of big money. One of the things we, as citizens need to address are the impressions we have regarding our own governance.

Marshall McCluhan may have been the most prescient of all the “futurists” when he reminded us that “the Media is the Message”. The media is owned by big money and it not only reflects society, it defines our society. It tells us what is the next big thing, the “must haves”. It sells the message that big Money wants sold and keeps us entertained, while big money gets bigger.

I have said, in other posts, that I consider the downfall of the American economy to be the handiwork of “Bushco,Inc.” Bushco,Inc. is term I use to describe the current incarnation of the “military/industrial” complex we were warned about by Ike. It is the betrayal of the American middle class to the bottom lines of national and multinational corporations and the growing world economy.

Until we elect a congress that will shut down K Street and reform the election process, our government will continue to struggle. The bottom line is that we, as a people have to turn off Desperate Housewives and American Idol, get active in local politics, and turn this country around.

this is the most succinct statement in your post, and i wish people would take it to heart….

I think it goes beyond just getting active because if a bunch of morons get active that will be the worst thing ever, especially if they can mass a majority. I guess this is possibly the position we are in and have been in ever since the end of the revolutionary war, perhaps it is a status quo that sets in after revolution, who knows. What is important for the population to do is educate themselves on government, all kinds of government, historical governments, actions that have been taken, things that have been tried, and then form a more educated opinion of what should be done. Having an understanding of historical actions and how people are manipulated gives us the ability to decipher cons when they are presented to us, such as all these bailouts. People must educate themselves and then get active. Getting active first is sort of like building a house before you have a plan.

Bernie did not go into government for the money. He does not need the money. This letter is offensive, does not deserve more of a response, and hopefully will not be published.
