I read on the front page of The Daily Sentinel that Hooters Restaurant is soon to be joining the group of national chain restaurants to grace Grand Junction. This development was lauded with a front-page teaser and an article inside.
My question to those who will welcome Hooters with excitement is this: What is the difference between Hooters and the proposed strip (gentlemen’s) club the community is up in arms about?
They both serve alcohol. They both feature scantily clad women using their attributes to earn tips. They both are based on the time-tested adage that sex sells, and that is precisely what Hooters sells. (Trust me, the food is not that good and the beverages will be a bit pricey.)
Where is the outrage? Where are the feminists protesting the exploitation of women? Where are the protesters complaining that this kind of establishment does not belong in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood?
If I were among the investors wanting to open the strip club, I would be back in front of the zoning commission with these arguments. Perhaps all it takes to be welcome is to serve chicken wings?

Those who are protesting and otherwise objecting to the opening of Hooters are providing more advertising and promotion for the establishment than the owners could possibly purchase with their own money. I can almost see the owners laughing about it all with anticipation of a very profitable grand opening. I also wonder how Mr.McCarney has obtained knowledge about the quality of the food served at Hooters. Unless they offer delivery service it would appear one would have to patronize the restaurant in order to sample the food.

I took my wife to a Hooters back in Illinois once. She had a Reuben sandwich, and she said it was the best one she’d ever had.

Perhaps irony and sarcasm are no longer taught in the local schools. I believe the point is why the outrage over the strip club and not Hooters. In addition, perhaps Kevin has been to a Hooters some where else.

“They both feature scantily clad women using their attributes to earn tips”
If all a strip does is feature scantily clad women it won’t last long.
I’m not opposed to either but Hooters are no strip clubs and strip clubs are no Hooters.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a strip clup serving buffalo wings.
Best of both worlds!

How did I misspell “club” as “clup”?

It is sad to see our city father’s have no common sense! They refused a strip club…AKA…Gentleman’s Club yet have allowed another form of ADULT ENTERTAINMENT!I have 5 sons and a daughter plus 3 grand babies.I highly doubt the atmosphere is one for families!Would the city allow me to open a business that uses the LARGER ASSETS of a man to get people to patronize my business?I highly doubt that any business that promotes the use of sexuality to make profit will help in areas such as DRUGS,PROSTITUTION,CRIME RATES nor will it boost the value of real estate.I laugh at the comment by the city about family valuesthen they allow HOOTER’S to open here!

Nativeamerican, Hooters is a restaurant/bar with waitresses dressed in skimpy outfits. It is not a place that leads to an increase in drugs and prostitution.
You want to outlaw skimpy outfits? Why don’t you propose a general dress code for the population of the city. Have you not seen girls wearing pants that go to a milimiter above the crotch?
You want to outlaw businesses that promote sexuality as a means of making a profit? Why don’t you start by shutting down all movie theaters and TV stations?

Bullishfrog,
First of all you OBVIOUSLY never worked in the industry!I have and also have seen first hand what “HOOTER’S” did to the community. You might start by knowing what-why and how the statistics are compiled!I never said that television-movies and other forms of entertainment were perfect.I also never addressed the dress code of the population! If you look at statistics when you start chewing on an issue you might find yourself better informed.Any time you have any sexually related theme in any place of business it does affect the community. And in case you think breast size does not affect a visal response you are just foolish especially when accompanied by skimpy dress! My suggestion to you is KNOW what you are talking about before you ASSUME!

I have been to a Hooter’s; once. I, personally, don’t get any particular kick out of going there and I may or may not go to the one that opens here. But it is presumptious of you or me to tell others what to wear or where to go.
To suggest that having a Hooters in this town will result in an increase in prostituion and drug use sounds like a heck of a stretch.
You want to provide us with the statistics that show otherwise, based on a Hooters opening somewhere else, please provide a reference. I am open to anything concrete that would lead me to change my opinion.

I have been to Hooter’s a few times when I lived in the mid-west. Aside from a slight emphasis on the waitresses, it is no worse than Old Chicago. The waitresses wear orange shorts and either t-shirts or tank tops. Some of them are very nice to look at, some not so much.
If you’re looking for things that increase prostitution and drug use, you won’t get far looking at Hooters. At least no further than you would at any other restauraunt that employs female wait staff.

INTERESTING!!!! I made a propsal to open a business with the main attraction being men with over sized crotches and there was no comment! Asfor proof of the activity of businesses such as Hooter’s causing the type of community damages all you have to do is look on the INTRANET! Do the research.Look at crime statistics in areas where Hooter’s is available within the community.Recently our community closed a massage parlor. Many of us knew about that activity and voiced concern that took way too long before REALITY HIT HOME!I doubt seeing a man with an over ample crotch hanging over my table would make my ability to eat the food anymore appealing then some females breasts hanging over my food. The point was that the city has chose to use the double edged sword!Naked or not either business uses sexuality to gain profit.Do you think they plan to hire women with a size AA,A or B cup?THINK!That really answers alot in its-self!

No nativeamerican, that response is not acceptable. You want to prove your point you need to come up with a source that provides statistics which show a Hooters incresed the crime activity above what it was before it opened.
You apparently have a problem with breasts. What is that called, breastaphobia?

What, reading Lewis Carrol? Or playing D&D?

Both, or either.
Although the fact that you recognize the D&D connection says a lot.
And in all honesty, I didn’t know it was in Carroll.

Scott said;
” And in all honesty, I didn’t know it was in Carroll.”
It is Carroll;
” Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought –
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe. ”
From ” Through the looking glass, and what Alice found there”
A great nonsense poem and relevant to much of what is written here

Well, now I know where Gary Gygax got the name from.

Why are some people like nativeamericankitty so obsessed with sex, in particular the sexual escapades of others? Perhaps they could explain that to me as I find the entire subject absolutely boring. Perhaps in a juvenile who is just discovering sex, and deludes him/herself that he/she is making some monumental discovery, that might be understandable. But, for any individual laying any claim to being an adult? Give us a break! Sheesh!

Right on, rm! And yes, Scott, i enjoyed a little of both back in the day. I do believe Mr. Gygax can be counted among the well-known people who died this year–may the ultimate dungeon master rest in peace. Cheers!
P.S. I always think of the vorpal sword when Robin deletes comments–snicker-snack!

You might appreciate this then. I found a motivational poster a while back that I really like. It says: “Fantasy Football: It’s like Dungeons and Dragons for the guys that used to beat up the guys playing Dungeons and Dragons.”

Well, i never played fantasy football, but I was the only guy on the high school football team who played d&d. Probably never would have got any nookie if it weren’t for the football…
