From LeRoy Standish’s article in The Daily Sentinel, “Consultant works with commissioners at retreat,” one can conclude that the two dominant ones, Craig Meis and Janet Rowland, do not seem to recognize the difference between “leadership” and “bullying.” They exhibit more the characteristics of the latter than the former. That is also true when we look at the problem they appear to be having with county staff.
Everyone should ask themselves, what is that constant need for “retreats” at taxpayer expense? Certainly, there is need to withdraw at times, but there has to be plenty of space at the Mesa County building in which to hold such meetings. All they need do is get in a room and close the door. I am quite sure that if such is not possible, there is Mesa State College right down the street. Seems to some of us that either one could provide the desired isolation. Or, perhaps they consider such things a perk of office.
It reminds me of a situation I recently encountered. A state agency, wanting to “discuss” housing for the needy, scheduled its meeting at one of, what I am led to understand, the most expensive resorts in the state, Breckenridge. That, to some of us, makes no sense at all.
With many of the citizens attempting to cut back during these times, it would seem that anyone claiming to be a leader would be the first to do so. It truly is strange how it is always those supposed “leaders” who are the last willing to sacrifice.
