Mesa County Commissioners Craig Meis and Janet Rowland hosted a press conference last week demonstrating that good government is possible. Unlike the federal government, Mesa County foresaw the current downturn and chose to govern accordingly.

The commissioners have made budget changes and took measures to insulate the county during the downturn. The press conference also reminded me just how important the energy-industry sector is to our jobs and economy. And this is why the uncertainty created by Bill Ritter’s new drilling regulations frustrate me.

The limits on drilling are coming at the worst possible time and are making a bad economic situation even worse. In fact, even the Wall Street Journal now says Colorado has the most restrictive drilling regulations in our country. It appears there are some elected officials, like Meis and Rowland, who govern with common sense and foresight. I wish the folks at the state capitol had the same approach and vision.

And this letter demonstrates that is possible to use a lot of words and say precisely nothing.

The attempt by the Republican Caucus to try to paint Ritter as a “job killer” is patently ridiculous and completely transparent. How about some specifics, folks?

The letter writer is “complaining” about, what I believe, are regulations that have not yet gone into effect. Neither does he provide any information as to the how, and to what extent the regulations, would adversely impact the energy industry. He also totally ignores the fact that the “downturn” in that industry is primarily the result of “decreased demand”, as the economy has taken a nosedive.

It would be interesting to know if the gentlman has a “connection” to the industry. That is always an important consideration in evaluating an opinion, pro or con.

You will note, RL, that Mr. Childress uses the expression “limits on drilling”. This is a phrase cut directly from the COGA message board.

As far as malarkey goes, the letter is pretty well crafted. They do have some talent. They just don’t have the truth to work with.
