I just returned from a trip back East to visit family and friends. My son-in-law’s father — a big hunter, outdoorsman in North Carolina — asked me if I knew the name of the mountain he had hunted in the past out here. He could not remember the exact area so he called his long-time friend, a big hunter outfitter from Alabama who had brought him here for hunting and camping trips.

I spoke with this gentleman from Alabama and he told me they grocery shopped, gathered other supplies from Grand Junction, then headed to the Rangely-Meeker area through Rifle.

He asked how the Piceance Basin “was now?” He stated that he had been coming out here for 30-plus years until the wells went in. He further explained that the pressure releases from the wells were very “loud and noisy,” really interfering with his  experience as an outfitter.

He has since been taking his business to Canada where “there is still wilderness present.” He offered to write a letter or whatever was needed to remedy the situation. Otherwise he will continue traveling to Canada, although he truly loved coming to our area.

I wanted to share this conversation since one of the recent letters-to-the-editor “wondered who would be going to the Rangeley area anyway?”

well, at least he could get a pulled pork sandwich at the pink pig, served by some middle aged chick in a mini-skirt and shin high furry boots!
