The letter to the editor in The Daily Sentinel April 1 by Pete Ross, a diatribe against the science of global warming, is unintentionally very funny since it comes during the same week as the reports on the Copenhagen Climate Congress, a two year follow up to the IPCC report on human caused global warming.

As reported in “Science” (Vol. 323, p. 1546) the scientists announced that new data show that “the worst case IPCC projections, or even worse, are being realized.” There is no good news. Emissions are soaring, projections of sea level rise are higher than expected and climate impacts around the world are appearing with increasing frequency.

Among other highlights, Dr. Conrad Steffen of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences in Boulder noted that the loss of Greenland ice was accelerating.

Although this kind of information does not often appear in the Sentinel, (readers here apparently prefer the Astrology column), interested folks can easily find the news of this conference on the Internet.

Mr. Ross could not have a picked a better time to illustrate why we should be listening to those who make the earth sciences their life’s study rather than the local “instant experts.”

not today though, I am hoping that global warming begins to kick in tomorrow, it is hella cold out thare today!

  2. drunky

just kidding, dont fry me yet, as a geologist, I am aware that there are interstatial periods of warming in between global cooling cycles, but we do only look at a scale of time relative to our 70 years on earth and ignore geologic time altogether, it will warm and then it will cool, then warm again, so have no fear, the natural cycle of the earth will make things right or wrong again. Our ilk would be lucky to make it another 2K years anyway.

    Drunky,

I also have my college degree in geology. I have been posting to these forums for about four months. Great points you make but trust me you will find you are beating your head against a wall with anyone who supports the fraud of manmade global warming here. They all want to ignore millions and millions of years of the geologic past and the evidence it presents to show Co2 has never had anything to do with driving up tempurature. They want to put all their stock about 140 years of recorded tempuratures where it has only fluxuated less than .5 a degree in either direction during this time frame, which recorded tempurature started at the end of the little ice age by the way at the lowest point possible to begin recording tempuratures. The most recent excuse they are now coming up with after the hockey stick graph hoax completely eliminating the medieval warming period is the isotopes in the Co2 molecule. Even though it has been proven that burning fossil fuels releases Co2 with LESS isotopes (mass) than that of Co2 from naturally decaying matter. But alas according to the oh great wisdom of Mr. Fox, us locals are uneducated bafoons on such matters and we should leave the debate to the real scientists. Prepare to take a beating here you deniar, you heretic, lol. Good luck.

I think it is the rate of warming that should concern us, not the natural warming and cooling trends over long periods. Scientists that have offered us data analysis in order to influence decisions are not the enemy, nor fraudulant by their methodologies for conclusive evidence of climate change. I would turn to the publiusco internet site list for that hoaxing.

I agree, our species is not long for this planet, we have a weird, untreatable, intractable cancer; ignorance with a dose of self-righteousness without insight.

  5. publiusco

    Davinci,

Like I said, which the supporters of AGW want to totally ignore, what is the rate of warming? If you are saying .5 of a degree rise up and down over the last 140 years of recorded is rapid, you need to do a lot more research in to the past. This rate is nothing as compared to what has occurred in the past. By the way we have been in a cooling trend seince 1998. By the way, what websites did I offer that a hoax. Everything stated above was based on my own research by reading published scientfic data and books that did not support or rally against AGW. They are simple facts based on years of scientific research and recorded tempurature.

Even if this is a natural cycle (and I feel that davinci might be right in that the speed of the current warming rate is the big concern this time) other environmental impacts should be a consideration in our fossil-fueled frenzy: Air quality everywhere is a health hazard. Polluted waters are killing off fish species and harming us in various ways. Vegetation is dying. I could go on, but it’s all things that are obvious and have been documented for years.

I wish the whole phenomena would have been tagged “Global Climate Change” instead of “Global Warming”. Every time someplace has a harsh winter, people say, “If global warming keeps up we’ll all freeze to death,” or some other similar witticism. If you go with the G.W. scenario, it’s altering weather patterns, which means places that normally have mild winters are getting slammed, and places that are normally cold as hell, are warmer than normal. And some places that are usually colder than a well digger’s knees are way-cold, etc. Meanwhile, the poles and the glaciers keep on melting.

I’m pretty much what Mr. Drunky calls a local “uneducated bafoon.” But my goober gut tells me “Global Warming” isn’t just liberals and eggheads concocting an idea for sounding the Chicken Little alarm. Aside from that, I’m afraid I have to go with the cynicism in here too: Humans probably aren’t long for this Earth anyway. We are totally, irrevocably, a bunch of f-ups and truly do need to get the hell gone. Let’s let Big Mamma heal herself. It’s not like we’ve done anything to make us a vital element in the cosmos; pathetic, mewling, bloodthirsty, insignificant, egocentric creatures that we are.

    publiusco,

I don’t agree with you, but I hope you are correct. But with evidence like this from the “Flying Spaghetti Monster” you can see we are doomed:

    rm,

now that’s some great stuff lol.

  9. drunky

lswrtr, when did I call you an uneducated bafoon? I did not, you can read my post, I said nothing about uneducated bafoons, I am the dumbest kid who ever got a BS and the dumbest kid ever to get an MS too, I would never refer to someone as an uneducated bafoon. Just because someone has an education does not mean that they have a lick of common sense or even a big brain. I was just stating what the geologic record tells us, but then again, I could be wrong, the earth could be 6K years old and satan put the dinosaurs in rock to trick us.

  10. drunky

publiusco I should correct myself, I only have a minor in Geology, I am not a true geologist, all my buddies are geologists though and I did find Geology fascinating, however, you are the true geologist here.

  11. singerdog

You all are still arguing over global warming/climate change?

  12. lswrtr

drunky: I could be wrong, the earth could be 6K years old and satan put the dinosaurs in rock to trick us.>>

I don’t think you’re wrong, Mr. drunky. It’s exactly what that devil man would do. The people at the creation museum think A&E walked naked with the dinos, but that’s just plain silly. There’s no hardened evidence of a pretty white couple’s poo lying next to a T Rex’s. But I do believe there is evidence of flame-hardened 6,000-year-old devil doo near obviously faked dinosaur fossils. It glows hot-red and all who touch it start projectile spewing pea-green bile and sounding like they need throat cancer surgery. Dinosaurs? Nothing could be that big with such a small brain, except maybe Hulk Hogan. Some people are so deluded. Talk about uneducated bafoons!

Please accept my apology for being forgetful and confused in my eagerness to post. Mr. publiusco was the one referring to uneducated bafoons. Although I’m just a humble GED certified dolt, my belief in Bible God’s creation timeline is rock solid in its science. As I like to poettasize: If it’s taught at Oral Roberts U, it’s just gotta be true.

May God have mercy on “educated” bafoons.

Yes, this site is like an archaelogical find. I send it to scientists in the field of climate change to inspire them to work, and understand sometimes they need to dumb down their science so we can understand their data analysis.

There have of course in the past been rapid changes in the climate; due to meteor strikes or volcanoes. This is where the discussion gets dicey. Do human beings have the capacity to fowl their own nest with CO2? Duh.

  14. publiusco

    lswrtr,

I was the one who made the “uneducated buffoon” comment. That comment was made out of sarcasm in regard to the letter writer, Mr. Fox’s use of the term he used - “the local instant experts.” As a matter of fact I am sure there are a few actual experts on climatology who are locals. They could be retired or maybe they have not offered an opinion or published a paper on the matter. I found his “local instant expert” comment to be offensive and made by a man with no knowledge on such matters himself. Case in point. Mr. Fox cites the IPCC study on sea level rise as some kind of irrefutable evidence that AGW is occurring. He is own worst critic and thus would fall into the same category of an “instant expert” himself. Why? Because he is the typical sheep who does not take time to read the facts on such issues before he opens his mouth. Satellite data conclusively shows sea level has not risen at all. However the IPCC (a political body, not a scientific body) recently tried to show a rise in sea level of 2.3 mm per year. The IPCC got caught with their pants down when someone discovered that they used a SINGLE tidal gauge in Hong Kong Harbor to “average in” that number to all global sea levels to try and show a rise. The IPCC did this in spite of conclusive satellite data shown to them that sea level was not rising. The IPCC “scientists” once called on the carpet about this admitted and stated they used the Hong Kong Harbor data because they “needed to show a trend” – AKA they lied. This just proves my point even further. The AGW supporters only want to look at very small pieces of the puzzle to fit their agenda and ignore the millions of years worth of evidence that Co2 never caused global warming so why would think Co2 produced by man would do the same?

  15. lswrtr

    publiusco:

I knew where you were coming from. I just decided to have a little fun. I hope I didn’t offend you, and I apologize if I did. You state your case well. As I kind of declared in the first post, I don’t know enough beyond a gut feeling, and that can’t be taken to the bank.

I will stand by saying there are a slew of other environmental concerns that humans have caused, and they aren’t possibilities or myth.

  16. publiusco

    lswrtr,

No offense taken at all. I agree that man is messing up the environment and we should stop and find better ways. But to say global warming is caused by manmade Co2 as far as chsnging the climete, it’s just not so.
