I was taken by The Daily Sentinel article describing how the Western Colorado Atheists and Free Thinkers have taken it upon themselves to keep church and state separate.

Notebooks, pencils, pads of paper, videos and recording devices? This is a joke right? How can a county commission or city council operate effectively under conditions as stressful as that?

It sounds like the atheists have taken on the role of the Virtue Police that we see so infamously repugnant in the “’stan” countries, where the state is governed by and under the complete control of religions nuts.

Next thing you know they will be want to cane Commissioner Janet Rowland every time she uses the name Jesus.

Can we just knock it off and find something better to do?

Gosh! Imagine that! A group of concerned citizens making an effort to see if our government is doing what they are supposed to be doing! The nerve!

It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.

Robert, I support your idea of caining Janet every time she uses the name jesus as well.

I’ll settle for only when she’s on the clock.

Something better than defending the Constitution? OK, what would you suggest, Bob?

how’s about we cane anyone who has an idea or thought different from anyone else.

Isn’t a relief to know that SOMEONE is policing the county commissioners? Only the few citizens who bother to observe city and county government know about the legal violations at these two levels of government. All others are blissfully ignorant and think everything is just fine. And that’s exactly what got this country into the mess it’s in right now — handing power and trust to those who control our important institutions and who then use them get away with whatever they can for their own gratification.

drunky: “Robert, I support your idea of caining Janet every time she uses the name jesus as well.”

Well, I would not go so far as physical force, but would certainly chastise her for using religion for political purposes, which is what all of these discussions and debates are about, not any individuals private beliefs. And, it is not a matter of “Jesus”, it is how she “uses” Jesus.

I believe in most of the ’stan’ countries public meetings are opened in prayer to the most popular deity. that people cannot voice their concern about this is generally viewed as a negative in free societies, and a benefit when they can. I believe the author has the roles reversed.

    Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

I’m hoping these atheists get their objections together in some cohesive, communicative, understandable presentation to a legal forum that can deal with them.

We’re hoping it doesn’t have to come to that. A lawsuit would only cost the city/county money that could be better spent elsewhere. Don’t forget that the atheists are citizens too, and we don’t want to see money wasted any more than anyone else.
