It is time for evenhanded justice. Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman deserves the same consideration as Sen. Ted Stevens received. And, while we are at it, the subpoena on Karl Rove needs to be enforced — by U.S. Marshall if necessary.

From: The Birmingham News: Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman’s allies seek review of his conviction after misconduct in U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens case Thursday, April 23, 2009 MARY ORNDORFF News Washington correspondent

WASHINGTON - An expanded group of former state prosecutors has asked the federal government to review the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman in light of the Justice Department’s findings of misconduct in the case against former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. dropped the charges against Stevens a few weeks ago because the judge found that prosecutors in the case acted improperly at trial. Now Siegelman’s advocates want the same close scrutiny of how Siegelman’s corruption trial was handled in Montgomery three years ago.

Siegelman’s conviction was largely upheld by three federal judges in March, but he continues to file legal appeals and his supporters continue to work political channels to keep him out of prison. The Stevens case has accelerated that strategy.

As Stevens’ case was being dismissed, Holder told reporters he did not have an investigation under way into Siegelman’s case. Four days later, the group of 75 former state attorneys general - Democrat and Republican - wrote and asked him to start one.

“We believe the issues raised (by Siegelman’s defense attorney) require an immediate investigation because they go to the core concepts of fairness and due process - which are at the foundation of our criminal justice and legal system,” they wrote. http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/statebriefs.ssf?/base/news/1240474530116390.xml&coll=2

i am just wondering when an investigation into the torture and murder of Mary Jo Kopechne by senator ted kennedy is going to be opened. but i guess leaving someone to suffocate to death in a diminishing pocket of air in the back of a submerged automobile is not considered murder or torture if the offender is a democrat or a kennedy.
