With the government assuming large ownership positions in the auto industry, banks, an insurance company and mortgage firms, President Obama seems to have accomplished what President Bush could not do — privatization of Social Security, as well as Medicare and Medicaid.
The difference is that Bush’s proposal made participation optional while Obama’s plan has made it mandatory. Now our financial future is truly dependent on whether these semi-private enterprises succeed or fail.
