Once again, the Grand Junction Farmer’s Market is about to begin. My family and I will not be attending because of all the dogs , bikes and skateboards that are allowed to mingle with the crowds.
Fruita has a similar event — well attended — and it enforces a ban on dogs, bikes and skateboards.
Do you think the sponsors of this Grand Junction event will ever wise up?

hey dog owners, just bring some plastic bags to scoop up your dogs waste; sort of like changing your child’s diaper.

Damn all those bike-riding, fun-having, dog-loving hooligans! They shouldn’t be allowed in public places!

Right, TyDurden. Public places should only be for cranky, judgmental, old people. I don’t know why those other people let their kids and dogs out of the yard in the first place. Maybe open season on dogs, bicyclists, and skateboarders is the answer.
The residents of Happy Valley certainly have enough guns to alleviate the problem in a hurry.

Hmmm…I was there for a couple of hours. I wasn’t bothered by a single bike or skateboard, and every dog we passed was leashed and well-controlled. Navigating the crowds of people was a bit tricky, but that was part of the fun.

i guess john is one of those people who also think bicyclist shouldn’t be allowed on the roadways either.
having honed my bargaining skills in china, i enjoy the challenge of the famer’s market

I am a 50 year native of here and totally agree with John. Dogs do not belong at public events. I know good manners and a courtesy towards others in public is becoming a thing of the past, but it shouldn’t.

duke: “The residents of Happy Valley certainly have enough guns to alleviate the problem in a hurry.”
Careful now. Some of us realize that duke is joking but some of those who see “guns” as the solution to everything might just take that “solution” literally.

I also agree with Mr. Slay’s letter. This is one of those issues where common sense and courtesy should be the rule, but too many in our culture only think about their “rights” and have been conditioned to “anything goes unless it’s against the law”.
I’m an animal lover myself, but I don’t need them by my side all the time. Some folks, not just “old-fogies”, are afraid of dogs (or highly allergic)- and many small children are deathly afraid to meet up eye-to-eye with a strange animal that’s as big as they are, salivating over their hot dog or likely to de-capitate their ice cream cone. So even though it may not be “against the law”, I don’t have the right to allow my animals to be in the faces of small children in crowded public places or force parents with small children to have to “be on the lookout” for my dog. Even well behaved dogs can be unpredictable in crowds, especially if there are other dogs around.
We already have laws that restrict dogs from grocery stores, restaurants and other crowded public places like the Mall. And although we shouldn’t need *laws* to promote common coutesy, I see nothing wrong with restricting dogs from a farmers market where food is handled, served and consumed.

Keep the dogs and ban Republicans from the Farmer’s Market. They’re the ones who seem to foul everything around here.
