I would like to comment on The Daily Sentinel’s recent article about the Western Colorado Congress. As the Sentinel pointed out, WCC has been an influential voice for 30 years on behalf of our communities in their efforts to protect water quality and clean air, as well as their right to influence oil and gas and land-use regulations. It is, thus, unfair that some people characterized WCC as a “radical” organization.

Our members are thoughtful, responsible and reasonable citizens who have worked with local government regarding a number of issues in a productive manner over the years. Differences are an inevitable part of living with others, and how we resolve those disputes is the hallmark of a civil society.

It is fair to say that WCC is a victim of its own success because it successfully addressed many issues. Thus, urgent demand for action can diminish, and money is scarce in these recessionary times.

Fortunately, WCC is more than its revenues. It will exist even without past cash flows because it is driven by concerned members who volunteer time, energy, and expertise in order to enhance the health, well-being, and participation of everyone in our communities on the Western Slope.
