In today’s e-newsletter (Oct. 6, 2009), you wrote glowingly of Grand Junction’s health delivery system, saying it should be replicated around the nation. I certainly agree. But someone needs to point out that the very system you praise so highly is nearly 180 degrees out of phase with the system currently being promoted in Congress and the Senate.

The Grand Junction system, which you asked President Obama to consider the “model for the nation”, is overseen locally, not nationally. It does not create out-of-control deficits. It requires almost no Federal intrusion. It has not even hinted that I must relinquish my personal insurance in favor of a “public option”. And it has demanded no additional taxes out of my pocket to underwrite it. PLEASE support in your positions and votes in Congress the very things you laud in your newsletter.

What is ironic is that the Grand Junction model that the administration has praised was dropped by Federal Government for use by Federal employees.

So, how many people in Mesa County are without medical insurance and how many of those are without voluntarily? How does the “Grand Junction model” deal with those? Insurance reform is meant to include everybody and also put in motion cost cutting . Does the sad experience in this country , both in care and cost, relative to the rest of the highly developed world mean anything to reform detractors? Covering the currently uncovered will have a cost but reforms throughout the system wil cut overall costs greatly. Nevertheless, those who don’t want to pay for somebody elses insurance are correct. They’ll be contributing. Have the detractors ever investigated virtually all othe kinds of insurance as to who benefits and who is paying in more than they recieve, at least in dollars but maybe not in terms of peace of mind? If you currently have insurance and lose it for one reason or another, see what happens!

“So, how many people in Mesa County are without medical insurance and how many of those are without voluntarily?” And how many of those folks realize that their mandatory enrollment is what is being planned to pay for the health care reform under almost every scenario? The young voters who now play the health insurance odds will then have to open their pockets to pay for the change.
