It was recently announced that Cabela’s Outfitter Stores would be opening a retail branch in the Mesa Mall sometime in the near future. While this is good news for a number of people and agencies in the area, it may present a bit of a challenge (for market share) to locally owned businesses such as Gene Taylor Sporting Goods.
Gene Taylor and his family have been active members of this community for decades. Few families or business entities have had more impact on the lives of people (of all ages) of western Colorado than the Taylors have, through support for programs and activities for children, adults and senior citizens. Thank you, Gene Taylor, for giving so generously to the community in which we live.
Gene Taylor Sporting Goods has been providing western Coloradoans (and visitors to the area) with a great place to buy quality sporting goods for decades. The need for durable and functional outdoor gear is what first brought many of us through Gene Taylor’s doors. Most of us return because we know we can count on the quality and pricing of the products and the knowledge of the sales and service staff.
As a community member, I am thankful for the jobs that the Cabela’s store will bring and for the potential additional tax revenues. When and where possible, I will continue to buy goods or services from locally owned retailers such as Gene Taylor’s and would encourage other sportsmen and women, athletes and outdoors people to do the same. As a consumer, it is rare to have the opportunity to purchase a quality product at a reasonable price and feel that in some small way we are supporting Gene’s vision of re-investing in this community.

unfortunately, when big box stores come in, smaller mom and pop stores go out, its evolution of a sorts. I too shop and shopped at local sporting goods shops such as gene taylors and stephens sporting goods, but those days of being the only game in town are gone and gene taylor’s must evolve or disappear. Unfortunate for Gene Taylor’s but a boom for consumers…..
