The girls attending the Mesa County Junior Cheer Association’s summer cheer camp tore up their T-shirts, tied sparkles to their ponytails and competed for the coveted spirit stick Tuesday at Canyon View Park.
It is the second day of cheer camp for local middle-school squads. Eight teams and 230 girls will be working on dances, cheers, and team-bonding exercises this week.
The camp is taught by the Mesa State College cheerleaders and former Spirit Express All-Stars.
“We’re giving the girls a big camp right here at home, making it easier financially on their parents,” said Tena Preuss, president of the Junior Cheer Association.
Pruess said cheer camps were important to young women because it gives their season a good start and helps with self-confidence and sportsmanship.
Spirit Day will end with a bump-n-jump and water slide.
There will be final evaluations and ribbons awarded Wednesday when the camp ends.
