Peggy Malone, country-western singer and cowboy poet, sings as Virginia Evans shakes the maracas at Family Health West Nursing Home in Fruita Thursday afternoon.

Cowboy Poet Peggy Malone slid into a booth at Lois’ Place this week. On the wall near her booth was a biography of a veteran killed in Iraq. The story so moved her she penned this poem:
Lois’s has many veterans stories displayed to honor their service. “I just thought that was such a classy thing to do for a little restaurant,” Malone said.
Malone, an Emmy award-winning Western singer, intends to add verses and music, turning the poem into a genuine country song.
“Lois is a pretty nifty lady to put up ‘In God We Trust’ right behind the register, so I thought I’d write a poem about it,” Malone said.
Malone is a avid supporter of veterans, she said, adding that her husband Billy is a 75-year-old Marine who served during the Korean War.
Once a month, Malone entertains the residents at the Family Health West Nursing Home, some of whom are veterans.
She knows most of the residents by name, encourages them to shake the maracas, tap their toes, and sing along if they want.
“Aaaaye, Yiiii, Aaaaye,” she crooned for the crowd Thursday during a spirited acoustic rendition of “South of the Border.”
She picked two of the men out of the crowd, noting that one had served in WWII and the other in the Korean War, then serenaded them with a special Naval song just for them.
Anne Mackey couldn’t stop tapping her hands on her knees during “Boot Scoot Boogie.”
“I think she’s absolutely wonderful. She’s smart and peppy and you just want to smile right along with her,” she said.

Isn’t Peggy just wonderful. She often warms our hearts with her stories and poems. I was reminiscing a few days ago about our breadman that delivered to our house in the early “50’s” and mentioned how kind he was to us children and our dog…..and she wrote a poem about it….and I’ll keep it for ever and ever. Love ya, K

IN THE 1950′S, WHEN WE WERE YOUNG
CHARLIE THE BREAD MAN, TO OUR DOOR WOULD COME
OUR DOG BUFFY…WOULD RECEIVE A PAT
TAIL A WAGGIN’…FROM WHERE HE SAT
WE’D WATCH FOR HIS TRUCK…COMIN’ DOWN THE LANE
US KIDS GOT CANDY…WHEN CHARLIE CAME
OH HOW I WISH… FOR THOSE DAYS GONE BY
THIS SWEET MEMORY…BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE…..
(thought I’d share your poem..seeing that you mentioned it…

Peggy Malone was our choice to sing at our wedding in 1996 at Powderhorn. She has become a fast friend ever since. Her talents have mostly gone unnoticed on the Western Slope and we hope that businesses, parties, weddings, etc., will start calling on her. She is literally a “one-woman” band and needs no backup to help her entertain. LOVE YOU PEGGY…WONDERFUL ARTICLE!!
