Customers lined up outside Hastings Books last night to be among the first to purchase the new “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ game.
The highly anticipated game has been available for pre-order since June. It is the sixth game in the series made for Xbox and Sony PlayStation 3 game players. The new game is a first-person shooter game set in modern times. The original “Call of Duty” games were set in WWII.
The game is rated M 17+ for mild blood, gore and foul-language. The main character, Soap MacTavish, must fight his way through a series of combat situations to reach the next level of play.
“It’s not flying off the shelves, but there’s been a lot of people who want it,” said Jeremy Freier, sales associate at Hastings.
Gamerz Planet had a small line in front of the store at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Within hours the store had already sold out of the Xbox version of the game. Only a few games were available for the PS3 Tuesday afternoon.
According to Gamerz Planet owner Mike Morris, nearly 2 million copies of the game had been sold nationwide after the midnight release Tuesday morning.
“It’s the biggest game of the year and it just gets crazy,” Morris said. His store sold 175 copies of the game, including pre-orders, by Tuesday afternoon.
The most popular aspect to the game is its online interaction, making playing with a friend across town or across the world possible, said Alex Rollins, manager of Gamerz Planet.
“You can really communicate with this game, talk to real people while you play, and a lot of people really get into it,” Rollins said.
The older versions of the “Call of Duty” games are still some of the best-selling games in the store, Rollins said.
The new game is also available in a Hardened Edition which includes an artbook, voucher for “Call of Duty 7,” actual working night-vision goggles, and “an awesome box,” Rollins said. It retails for $79.99.
Gamerz Planet will have more copies available on Friday.
